Peter Wick's Micro Thread

Hi RnP,

I'm coming down to wire with my IMMT training and this is the last hurrah (week 17/20) before starting to taper. Last Sunday I raced the olympic tri at the New Jersey State triathlon with a big contingent of Mapso Nation. We just lost out to Philly Pro Tri (they're all sponsored athletes, we're not. So there! [raspberries]). I want to know if I can use that bike leg as my FTP test instead of what I'm supposed to do tomorrow. I didn't taper for this race except for an easy Saturday and just swapped it in for that Sunday's workout.

The bike leg was 22.5 or so miles (short due to bridge construction) and it took me a little over 57 minutes to do that portion. My average power was 247W and NP was 252W. I could have had a more steady effort but since I was in the 8th of 10 waves to start the swim I found myself constantly having to negotiate tight spots with much slower riders already on the course. The course was relatively flat and there were a lot of tight turns. I had to back off much earlier than usual at almost every one.

Should I still do the test tomorrow? Thanks and heal up, P.

  • Oh well, time for bed. Mapso hill workout tomorrow morning and my peeps will be waiting. I'm their, uh, spiritual leader. Won't be no FTP testing happening after that little shindig.
  • Pete- FWIW, I didn't get the FTP test done today either and plan to squeeze it in next week before the final RR.

So much for the testing. 175 ft/mile of climbing.
  • Maybe it's me, but if you're willing to kill yourself on hill repeats, but not do an FTP test the only word that comes to mind is......AVOIDANCE!!!! Git er dun.... I'm directly challenging you to do the 20 minute test and hit an ave. power of 275, which will put your FTP at 260 for IMMT. MAN UP, DAMMIT!---love you cousin!
  • But but but... What about the race on Sunday where I spent an hour at 252W NP??? Awww, Daaaaad! Hey, it could have been even higher wattage if it were not for all the crowded corners. Aren't you s'posed to be a WSM? Right back at ya, tough guy. Still coming up to IMMT?

As a WSM, the fact that watts could have been higher is the reason to test. I'm not going to IMMT, but will be tracking you from Illinois. I started riding again 2 weeks ago on the trainer--rough, I will email you about it. You'll crush it, then crush the race!!!
