Gearing for Boulder 70.3?

I'm doing Boulder 70.3 next week, and wanting to decide on gearing. Have compact, and trying to decide on 11-25, or 11-28? Heard pretty fast and hills not bad from some, others that they surprise you. Thoughts?

New to power and FTP low (I assume) of 209.

Thx,

Greg

  • Greg-I live in Ft. Collins and do time trials on most of the roads that make up that course a couple of times a season.  I'd go with the 11-25.  The course is pretty rolling and you can get enough momentum to roll-up most of the hills.  There is nothing steep enough where you'd need the 28 and you'll want the tighter gearing for the rollers.

  • Thanks Joe!

One question. I understand the course changed, and there now a "bigger" hill at the start. See:

Does this change anything? I am trying my 11-28 today on some hills, but just no idea of comparison with Boulder's course. Another person mentioned that always safe to make sure gearing is conservative so won't burn a match. But if no way on this course with 11-25, then like you said...tighter gearing would be nice!

All the best. And thx again,

    Greg

  • Greg-sorry for not responding. I was in IMLP blackout mode. How'd the race go. I wouldn't think you needed the 28 with the one loop course for this year.
  • No worries! I did go with the 28, and sadly, I needed it. I just started with a power meter and only am at an FTP of 210, so was in low range to need it. But the bike ended out being pretty solid for me. Held the power pretty well, targeted 82% and ended up with VI=1.03.

Wisconsin next! Definitely the 28! image

    All the best,
    Greg
