SRM power meters

Looking to make the move to a crank based PM, inexpensively if at all possible. So I'm looking at used ones and have come across several SRM PM's. I understand that with SRM, I will need to send the unit in to them for battery changes. How big of a pain in the neck is this process and should I just shy away from the SRM and choke up the extra $$ for a Quarq? comments appreciated...

  • I have an SRM and like it. No problem sending it in except being without it for a couple weeks. Only problem with SRM is the price for a new one. Mine predates Quarq.
  • Have you considered Stages? Several folks on the team have tried ... Actually, put it SO's bike...and say it is stable, reliable, and accurate.
  • I've never had a problem with my SRM. The battery charge is only needed once every couple of yrs so it's not that big of a deal. If the price is right, definitely get the SRM. Historically, the Quarq's are much cheaper than the SRM.
  • Thanks for the input guys...I appreciate it! I've missed a couple of Quarqs I've been outbid on so far..but probably prefer the ease of the self-install battery there..although after reading John and Kevin's comments, will look at the SRM too. I was thinking a battery change would be needed 1-2x year.

Al - looked into the Stages, but I ride a Cervelo P2, and Stages doesn't make anything with the FSA cranks yet. So aside from swapping out the entire crank system I have, it doesn't make sense for me. But, I do like the idea.

It comes down to me finding the right fit...must be GXP, compact crank, 170 or 172.5, and of course priced right. There are a few I'm watching now...hopefully I can buy them right!

    Thanks All!
  • I really see no reason to go with a SRM when Quarq does pretty much the same exact thing at a cheaper price and with easier maintenance.
  • x3 what Bob said. I LOVE love love my Quarq. I already had to change the battery and it was super easy.
  • Except that the original Post was that the SRM's Brad was finding were cheaper than the Quarqs... I know MANY people who are very happy with their Quarq's and they are great units with awesome customer support. But I also know many people who have had to use that great customer service to send their Quarqs back to be serviced or fixed. Any electronic technology laden product can have glitches or issues. The SRM is thought of by many to be the 'gold standard' in Powermeters and is generally the PM of choice for many of the pro cyclists. I'm not suggesting a SRM is worth 2x the money of a Quarq, but if it's anywhere in the context of the same price of a Quarq for a wireless SRM, there is no question in my mind that I would choose the SRM.
  • Have you looked into "Power2max"? DC rainmaker has a review on it. Love mine!
  • I have an SRM and a Quarq. Both work fine. The Quarq issue is that they are owned by SRAM. If you want a SRAM crank, you are sitting pretty... If you want something else, like a styling Euro roadie, you go SRM. They make a compact, Super Record crank with SRM to compliment an EPS Gruppo.

    Just saying....
