When do you change your saddle?

Apart from hosing it up in a crash as some of our unfortunate teammates and coaches are prone to do, when do you change out your saddle? I have been fighting a mild saddle sore with the race bike I am taking to Sweden. The bike is 3 years old and has a Fizik Antares seat. I have done an IM with it and a boatload of halves. My other race bike has a Fizik Arione Tri 2 which I like a little better. Neither are wonderful and neither cause me agony or numbness. I was thinking of replacing my Antares with a Cobb SHC 170 but am having second thoughts because I am too close to the race. If I didn't have a sore spot I wouldn't even think about changing. what would you do, and why did you make a change?

  • I'd put the Arione on the race bike for Sweden and get a new saddle after the race. I have the Cobb SHC on my new bike for about 7 weeks and it is definitely different than my Tri Arione that was on my old Tri bike. I like it but you want to get used to it before your IM.
  • Like you said and like Robert said change it after the race most important. After the race have at it try and buy all the seats you want to. As far as your.... injury..... butt butter and lots of it.
  • Like everyone said - wait until after the race. I traded my Arione for the SHC 170 two years ago, and like it a lot better. It does take some getting used to. I'm actually thinking about trying the new Cobb Gen2 saddle. But you can't go wrong with the return policy.
  • Thanks guys, I will wait.

@ Robin - I will have to look up lantiseptic. My sister in law is a Pharm D and gave me a special cream that seems to be doing the job.
  • plug again for Profile Design tri styrke.      I have the one with the hole.         NO adjustment or breakin period.    very comfy.    the only that has worked for me.      the cheapest one is cheap.
