SC Bike

I raced a SC duathlon and got 2nd in my age group yesterday. What I find amazing, now that I know the EN way, biking a race is really nice once you know how.

Sooner or later you will be in a group of folks who are at your biking level during the race. They will power up a hill take it easy on the way down. They will power into the wind because they slowed down some. I watch this in riders and just smile as I know I got you maybe not now but sure enough as the race goes on I pass them. If I see them on the run, if they run my pace, I will more than not hunt them down and pass them too, as they are spent from the bike. Very cool!

  • David - I agree for the most part and I've seen people so spent that they crest the hill poorly (if at all). The big difference I see is that for Short Course races you have to find a balance between pushing hard so you don't lose ground but not pushing so hard that your legs are fried. In the Power Meter book by Joe Friel he called it Burning Matches - you have to know how many matches your conditioning and the course make-up allows you to burn. Experience, as per usual, is best way to know.
  • I don't think I passed 1 person going uphill in my last Olympic race. Maybe 1. I know a lot of people passed me going uphill yet maybe 1 or 2 had an overall better bike split. And I'm running so much better off the bike. Racing more helps a lot but so does having a power number to look at and not go over.
