Hi coaches,  question regarding the ironman plans.... ever since we added the "get fast" segment I have been struggling with the transition from get fast to the actual ironman training plan.  so i just finished my transition from "get fast" and i just loaded up the ironman 20 week plan, which only works out to 12 weeks before beach to battleship-10/26/13.  the end of this first week (week 8 Interm plan) is a 1hr S, 3.5 hr B, 1 hr R.  this seems to be a big jump for me in the last 2 seasons.  this will take me time to recover from this coming saturday's workout.   so why do we not have a 12 week plan, only 20 week to choose from?  if this is a tough transition for me should I bag the get faster portion in the future and just do the 20 week plan?   I'm having a tough time understanding this.  just looking for clarity,  thanks guys.

We used to have a 12wk plan but it was/is identical to the last 12wks of the 20wk plan. So we eliminated those 12wk plans and just have everyone work from the 20wk plans, loading them up earlier/later to get in anywhere from 12 to 20wks of the plan.

In my opinion, I think you're underestimating the fitness and endurance you have. You'll be fine

  • Hello Coach..my A race is B2B iron distance on 10/26/13. I'm in week 10 of the intermediate Iron dist plan
I need to re arrange my schedule because of a 1/2 iron i'm doing this sunday 8/18 "peasantman". I'm also out of town 9/14 & 9/15 with no possible way to train due to circumstances.
    week 11 - (saturday) 8/24 is a scheduled 1hr S, 4hr B, 1hr R. this is 1 week after 1/2 iron race. I'm thinking move this out a week to 8/31 so I have 2 wks to recover from 1/2 iron?
then that still gives me 3 wks until RR 1. sounds like a simple change...weekend of 9/7 won't work either so the only other option is to drop the week 11 S,B,R. what do you think, am I moving this too close to RR 1?
    thanks Rich

  • Hi Coach, are you able to see my question from the 14th? thanks, Joe

Joe, sorry I missed this. You're fine moving all of that stuff around in whatever manner works for you. The one workout you want to be careful with (don't move it on the calendar) is the final race rehearsal. The timing of the first one, and other stuff in relation to that first RR, isn't super critical

  • Hi Coach!  I just completed B2B but due to illness I had to drop out after the bike.  I was wondering how/when I should begin my OS?  I am signed up for IMMT in August 2014.  I don't think I need any real recovery from this past weekend because I didn't run.  It was kind of like a typical saturday workout.  Appreciate your thoughts????

    thanks,  Joe

  • Sorry to hear about your race!

Please read this and let me know where your head is at.

  • Rich, my season started Jan this year with Boneisland Tri Iron distance and just ended with B2B.  even though I don't think I need the recovery physically because I had to back out of the run in B2B, mentally is another issue.  So, after reading, I think it would be a good idea for me to start Jan OS and take the next couple months to do some unstructured training and just enjoy hitting the gym for a while and enjoy the holidays!  My A race next year is IMMT and I want to really focus when I start back training.  thanks,

Ok, sounds like a good call. So I recommend you do the Run Focus plan, when you're ready to start, through Jan 6 or whatever, and start the JanOS with us on Jan 7th.

If that sounds good, the please submit your race schedule for next season via the Race Survey (under the Training tab above) and I'll plan it all out for you.

  • Hi Rich, I just loaded the 14 week Jan OS which takes me to 4/13. the only scheduled race I have so far is IMMT on 8/17. I'm sure I will jump into a couple shorter races and some LONG bike rides(that's my favorite) before then. I'm usually an eleveth hour guy and jump into a race if it will work into my "life" schedule. should I still submit a race survey.....looks like there will only be maybe 3-4 weeks of the "get faster" plan after the OS before I load up the training plan 3-4 months before mont tremblant? what do you think? thanks for the feedback

We can sort it out close to the race but, without looking at a calendar so I might be screwing this up:

    • Do OS1-14
    • Do the two Swim Camp training plan
    • Then load up the IM plan to end on IMMT.
  • Hi Rich, I submitted a season planning survey last sunday or Monday. I just wanted to make sure i didn't miss your response. double check my email, joe.crispino1@gmail.com. i may have left out the "1" after my name.

    thanks, Rich
  • I did this yesterday, Sunday. Please check your inbox.
  • Hi Rich, I'm currently in the GF Intermediate plan, I'll be loading up the IMMT intermediate plan on 5/26 to end on 8/17 IMMT. as I'm trying to get my summer work schedule organinzed, I'm wondering what the IM intermediate plan's week day run schedule will be? aside from the thursday long run, I'm mostly concerned with monday's and tuesday's

    Thanks Rich!
  • Joe,

You can load up the plan to take a look and then go back to the GF plan.
