Training at 7000ft for few days

Hey Coach Rich - So I am going from sea level to Santa Fe (at 7000 feet) for 6 days - yes, about 1-2 weeks before my first Olympic . Obviously, I'll be training while there and, since I previously lived there for 15 years, know that it will be 'challenging' on my lungs.

Besides altitude sickness, any thoughts as to how or if I need to tweak my training plan this week? Thanks - Ingrid

  • Forgot to add that I have read that I should drink a lot, take Ibuprofen, and not train the first day. Also read that I should train at my lower HR zones as well?
  • In my experience, you will likely have difficulty sleeping. Drink lots of water. Not sure about the ibuprophen but I don't think it's necessary. Training at your normal HR zones but ignore your pace...you'll just be slower at the same heart rates.

Also, look in the IM Lake Tahoe group section for more comments.

Finally, for hard intervals, its a lot better/easier to do them @ lower elev. Its probably onlu a 30 min drive south on I -25 to get below 5000 feet.
