Upgrade Powertap Pro+ or Quarq

Hi all, My powertap (Pro+)  I purchased in '10 is giving me problems (high numbers, zeros, not being able to calibrate, etc.), and battery changes in both CPU unit and hub didn't resolve the issues.  Called CycleOps and they are telling me the repair cost is $350, and if I want to trade it in for G3, it is $700.  I also spoke with Wheelbuilder guy, Benny through Rich, and he told me that the climate I live in (PNW), he sees more issues due to the moisture.  He also told me that G3 is better built for the climate.  I am debating if I should upgrade to G3, or pay more money to purchase a Quarq.  I train with my Cervelo P2 all year long, and don't care so much about having the power meter on a road bike if I decided to buy one for offseason training, but am interested in having less weight on my bike and use a race wheel.  I am kind of leaning toward Quarq, and then, my A race (IM Canada) is coming up on Aug. 25, so was wondering if there is any learning period that I don't have enough time for at this point.  It sounds like any route I take (repair, G3 upgrade or Quarq purchase) would take about the same amount of time.  What do folks recommend?  Which Quarq product is recommended for tri bikes?  Thanks for your help!

  • I have a quarq on both my road bike and TT bike. I love them and ride in all conditions. You won't be disappointed I don't think

  • Hi Yasko, no real learning period for Quarq. It's pretty much plug 'n play. (Could consider re-testing to fine tune your FTP). I have an older version, the FSA SL-K Light that I upgraded with DA-7900 chain rings as I run Di2 on my steed. I am very happy with my Quarq. My only thought is that now SRAM owns Quarq they have pretty much discontinued all non-SRAM cranks, then it could be a slight issue for some (unless you are running a SRAM drivetrain). I have thought about a second PM for my road bike and I am personally considering a Stages PM or Power2Max because I can use Shimano with these PM's. That may be a nonissue for you, but I am just throwing that idea out there. DC Rainmaker gave a very nice review of Power2Max. In any case the Quarq is great. See u in Whistler!

  • quarq works for me.

but the powertap very versatile and that is a good deal for an upgrade.

  • These are basically the same. Both are bullet proof platforms with great service, consistency and reliability. Bummer that your PT went down, but it sounds like you got years of service from it. The difference is the "swap-a-bility".

If you want to run any wheel set you like, and like SRAM cranks, the QUARQ is awesome. I have one on one of my road bikes and I love it. It has the S975 SRAM crank and works great with the Dura Ace drivetrain. You don't even know it's there. It just does it's things.

If you want to use your preferred wheels on multiple bikes, then the PT is the way to go. It's another system that just works. I have a G3 hub laced into my Zipp 404's and and move back and forth between my two tri brikes - P3 and P5. The swap is easy. I just change the 11 speed cassette for the 10 speed cassette, or vice versa, and I am in business.

Sooooo, it depends on what you want to do with it.

I would say that regardless of what you choose, you will need another FTP test. Because they measure in different spots (drivetrain loss) you will get a slightly low, but totally consistent number on the PT then on the Quarq.

If you are truly agnostic, then go the cheapest route.... image
  • Consider a Stages power meter = replace your left crank arm = $699 for Shimano .....only adds 20g to stock components
  • FYI, PowerTap hubs just got a pretty hefty price cut. G3 hubs (hub-only, no wheel) are now $789.
