Rob Mohr's 2014 Season Layout - Need Some Help

Coach Rich (and anyone else that wants to weigh in  )...

Sorry in advance for the length of this post - just want to make sure I'm voicing all my thoughts to best plan appropriately.

After finishing my final triathlon of 2013 earlier this month, I'm trying to layout my 2014 race season. Below I've dropped some the races I'm considering along with some other considerations for planning. Essentially, I'm trying to pick several A-level races (1 HIM, 3 Olympic,) that are spaced appropriately for the right prep in advance and downtime between each. Ideally, the races would play to my strength in running. (Are there races better suited for runners? I do plan on improving my bike, but running will always be my strength.) If not playing to my strength in running, the closer to NYC the better. (For the HIM, I'm open to races in cool vacation spots too.)

Some considerations:

Before 2014 kicks off, I'll be running both the Rock 'n' Roll Brooklyn 10k (Oct. 12) and the NYC Marathon (Nov. 1). Both of these will be A-Level races. In 2 weeks I'll start getting serious about my run training and continue through until the marathon. I'll take at least 2 weeks off following the marathon to recharge before shifting focus to tri training.

Biking is a huge weakness for me and I’d like this coming OS and season overall to be devoted to developing strength on the bike. In addition to really focusing my own training efforts on biking, I’m hoping that I can also join a bike-focused EN camp or something of the sort – preferably in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic – that times well with my HIM race.

I would like to do the HIM before the majority of the Olympics. I did EagleMan this year and followed it with the NYC Olympic and it worked out really well for my training. (Thanks for recommending that I make NYC an A-Level!!) The “Get Faster” program was fun after the HIM work and I was really motivated to crush the short distance race, especially with the longer distance already completed.

HIM Distance

  • Hawaii 70.3 (May 31)
  • EagleMan 70.3 (June 8)
  • Open to other suggestions but want it to be Ironman branded.

Olympic Distance

  • South Beach Triathlon (April 6)
  • Philadelphia Triathlon (June 22)
  • New York City Tri (August 3) – Definitely doing this one

  • Life Time Tri Chicago (Likely August 24)
  • Malibu Triathlon (Likely Sept 6)
  • Nation's Triathlon (Likely Sept 14)
  • Mighty Montauk (Likely Sept 28)
  • Open to other suggestions based on races best for runners (if these exist).

Thanks for your help and sorry for being neurotic...

  • Hey Rich - In looking over my above post, I'm thinking I streamline it a bit to get the appropriate training advice from you and then turn to the Race Selection forum to get the best race selection advice from the ENers-at-large. With Coach P on the IR, hopefully this saves you some time to tend to other to-dos.

Here's the streamlined version of my long-winded post:
    - I'm unable to start OS until late November due to NYC marathon. With that in mind, will early June be too soon for an A-level HIM? I need to make pretty drastic improvements on the bike. My FTP is barely 200watts or 3.13 watts/kg, so I want to invest the necessary time in getting it up to speed. If I bust my ass, 6 months should be enough time right?
    - Following the HIM, I'd like to do 3 A-level Olympics. What's the optimum amount of time between each to properly recover and train to hopefully improve time? I'd prefer to be done racing by late Sept. at the latest. If this is not enough time, I could scale back to just 2 A-level Olympic races following the HIM.
    - Knowing that I'm a strong runner, is there something I should look for in selecting races that could play to this strength? Harder run course? Easier bike course?

    Thanks!
