  • This will be my first time in Vegas. My goals are to enjoy the day, work on my nutrition and be competitive. I also want to race smart and to finish strong.
  • Has anyone ever had luck getting a saturday athlete check in.  I know it specifically says no sat check in but with flight times and sitting logistics I am wondering if there is a way around the fri check in..

  • Eric, I would contact the WTC to see if arrangements could be made.
  • Hi, Trish here. I've raced here for ITU worlds (2.5 swim, cancelled...75 mile bike with the 3 sisters that I believe are not a part of this race, thank goodness!, and 4 loops of th run for 18.6 in 57 degree weather) after competing at American TTT and Placid that year.

Just qualified last Sunday ta Steelhead. I'm concerned about the heat, hills and no wetsuit swim. Pretty much going for the experience as I don't know if I'll ever qualify again. I am not expecting to be competative in my ag...especially in the heat. I just want to do well, practice pacing and nutrition and do no harm for my training and A race, IMAZ.

Oh, and I'm going to buy up some serious swag! image
  • Eric, Saturday would be a push.  Especially since t1 and t2 are about 10 miles apart and you have to check your BIKE and RUN gear!  It's kind of a hassle, but if they allow you to check in Saturday, that is T2 and you could do the run gear right then.  Just be prepared to do that from the get go!

  • Hi I'm Annie Stokes from Maple Grove, MN.  Funny, my goals are about exactly the same as Trish's goals!    I just really want to take it all in and appreciate the fact that I am fortunate enough to be able to do this race!  I am not planning on ever doing it again...so this is it!  I am really nervous about the heat, since we have been having a really cold Minnesota summer. But excited at the same time!  I want to focus on proper nutrition and execution, doing the very best I can and buying LOTS of swag!!

  • Hi guys. I can't make it to Vegas this year due to a new addition to the family. But I've done it the past 2 years so if you all have questions about the course, logistics, etc just let me know and I'm happy to give you input. Also I have a couple of race reports out there in the race report forum. Cheers, Matt.
  • I talked with Melissa Olivas, fellow EN teammate. She lives in Henderson. This is what she had to say about the course. I also asked her how Vegas compares to St. George so I could gauge the difficulty of the course.

Hi Teri! I am so sorry I will not be here to cheer you on! I have ridden the course multiple times and I did the race in 2011 in a lottery slot. The key to the bike is to push yourself for the first 25 miles because you will have ample time for recovery. It is mostly long flat uphill with several steep hills during that time. You don't notice how much uphill it is until you turn around. This bike course has no snow canyon but I think it is more difficult than St. George 70.3. It is somewhat like the ride you did with us for the first 25 miles. Then, You have 20 miles of mostly downhill and flat. At mile 50 you begin the gradual climb to T2.

Once you get to T2 the run is downhill for a mile then you turn and climb back up to T2 and up the hill we ran together. It is approx 2 miles up and 2 down each way. The way we ran was 1 mile up.

The bike hills are manageable and you will enjoy the run. Take care not to smoke your quads on the downhill portion or you feel it on the way up. This course ruined many fit people last year who didn't race smart. The heat will likely be a factor. It is 103 as I sit writing this at the soccer field. I hydrate two days before hot races here with Endurolyte Fizz. I also use the sponges and hold ice in my hands when I run. Please let me know of any other questions. After training with you, I know you will do well on this course!

My husband reminded me that in the second 20 miles there is a 2 mile gradual climb out of the Lake Mead area but then you start a very long downhill which turns into flat until the climb to T2.

The main thing to remember is to keep it toward the high end of your acceptable zone the first 25 because the work decreases on the way to T2.

If you have any questions about the course, she said you could call or text her at (702) 279-0001.

    Teri

  • Thank you Teri! Looking forward to seeing you all soon!!
