Discrepancy between bike computer and TP

I have been noticing a discrepancy in IF and NP in my rides between the garmin 500 and TP after uploading.  Both are set to the same FTP but when I get back home and upload I see a 8-10 watt difference in the NP values and the IF.  I am assuming the computer head is wrong.  But not sure how to counteract it.  I was trying to keep all the 5 mile intervals on the 4.5 hr 75-80% ride right at or slightly above .80 knowing the way the value swings. Trying to get closer to .8 then .75  Once the auto lap triggers I check the lap to see what the last NP lap was and then scroll through looking at the overall ride metrics. Everything seems on target at 227 NP for the entire ride and then when I get home and upload its 218.

Any thoughts on why this occurs?

  • Do you have the Garmin and TP set to handle zeros the same way?
  • Al, great question as I have not made sure those were correlated. I do see on the Garmin that my power is non-zero average. I heard that is better and more realistic. Or is that backwards? Anyway, I do not see anywhere in the TP software a place to set recording rate or zero / non-zero averaging. Any idea where to look?
  • Does the garmin head unit agree with Garmin Connect?
  • I have not uploaded to Garmin. Lemme look.
  • Well, that took awhile to upload. The garmin connect matches what the computer head says and is different than TP. I like looking at the files on Garmin Connect and seeing the higher values. That's for sure.
  • ^^^ That tells me the head unit is probably working fine and the difference is in the settings. Confirm the FTP again and how zeros are being handled....
  • My head unit (joule 2.0) matches what Power Agent (also from CycleOps), but different than trainingpeaks wko+. There's no place to set to include/exclude zeros in wko+. So I've got the same issues, although with slightly different inputs.

My files have been in the hands of CycleOps since early July, but I've not heard anything back.
  • Ok, I think I was backwards. After reading and researching on the big I, I put the garmin to zero averaging. We'll see on todays big ride.
