Quarq battery drain issues?

I have had my Quarq since May/April and have had to replace the battery twice now.  Both after less than 5 hours of ride time, 100 miles.

My LBS informed me that there is a known issue with Quarqs and battery drain that can occur, so Quarq emailed me the fix. I have to manually short the circuit to allow for normal battery consumption, however it is not a guaranteed fix.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so - did the manual short fix the issue?

  • occ problems.   have never done a fix.     though for me, seems to correspond with bike stored with pressure on the crank.     so, make sure crank not resting against wall when stored.
  • Robin... oh good point. I never thought of that.

My bike rests against a wall, or is in my trunk or on a bike rack pressed against my car with the crank pressed against something (my car, my trunk or a wall). I will short it out and try keeping the bike on my trainer stand to assure no pressure to see if that helps.
  • Call Quarq - they have very knowledgeable people there answering the phones
  • Similar problem. Maybe.  My Quarq S975 seems to drop the power signal for an unknown reason. My head unit is a Garmin 510 and I also wear the Garmin 910XT. I use both to pickup the power & cadence signals but right now the signal is not there. I checked the battery with a volt meter and it was OK. I replaced it anyway just to make sure but that did not fix the issue. I contacted Quarq and they sent me the instructions for the Hard Reset, which I did. It worked for a few days. Then the signal was lost again. Its a bit intermittent now ... sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Quarq wants me to send them them the S975 unit. I'll send it to them after my last major Sprint race in Chicago at the end of this month.

  • I had a similar problem with my quartg. I had a short in my pm, quarg replaced my spider free of charge. I had it back within a week with no issues. There customer service is awesome.
  • I had this same issue. I was or thought I was going through a battery a week. It always seemed to go out on my long ride at the beginning. It would be early in the bike 35 to 50 minutes in and bam nothing. I would try to reset the battery and recalibrate (always got error). My computer would see the PM but not record any data. I called Quarq each time and I was given a different set of tasks to get it back. First was flip the battery to reset, which I knew. Then it was lift the sprongs under the battery to ensure all of them are touching the battery. Just pry them up a touch to ensure battery touching. Third was under the battery in the battery compartment there is a small allen wrench (2mm) if I remember correctly, and just tighten that a little. I was told several times not NOT to over tighten but make sure it's snug. Mine was a little loose and Alex said this had been an issue in the past for some callers. Unfortunately, I learned after each new task it still didn't work. Now, I would do all these tasks each time it went out on me. To try and reset and get it started. It never would during the ride. I even tried a couple of hours after the ride and nothing. It wouldn't start working until the next day. Very weird.

The last task and phone call in was similar to the first one was flip the battery. But, it was explained to put the battery in as if it were a coin and ensure that it touches the sides to get a good reset. I asked several times for him re explain the 'putting it in like a coin' with no further explanation. Anyway, I ensured that I touched the battery on the edges while the prongs were lifted after tightening the battery compartment. But I said to the guy, even resetting this it's not gonna work because it still stops recording after it resets itself and I start a new ride each week. I sent it back and got a new spider. So far so good. So back to the initial thought, I went back, grabbed a multi meter and tested my batteries that I thought were bad. Nope, all still good. 2.97 to 2.99 v for each battery. They tend to go bad at less than 2.5v so still plenty of good riding in them.

    Just my experience.
