Beth Hornak Macro Thread
Next Saturday is my bike / run rehearsal, but we will be visiting family. I am not sure at this point if I will be able to bring my bike, so I would like to know what the strategy would be if that is not possible. I am on the Beginner Sprint plan and that will be week 18. I can move it to Thursday if you would recommend that.
Thank you,
Beth

Yep, just move the RR to Thursday
My last tri was yesterday......I need to know what plan to load next. I am still super new here and apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.
Thank you!
Beth
The start of the November OutSeason (we like to have as many members as possible start the OS at the same time) is October 28th. I recommend you do either the Bike or Run Focus training plan, choosing the weaker of your two sports.
I know there are specific times to plan for 2014, but I would like to begin the discussion to have a general framework from which to look at races and distances. How is that generally done?
Thank you.
Elizabeth,
There is no timely, per se, you can submit your Season Planning Survey at any time.
However, in my opinion and experience there is often limited value in thinking and planning about things so far in advance. For example, right now I have members submitting SPs to me whose first races aren't until July. And while it's curious and interesting to see, now, what you will probably will be doing through July, it's not very useful. IMO, it's better for me to a conversation with folks along the lines of
"unless you are one of very few people who meet _these_ conditions, you'll start the OS on October 28th and finish that in early Feb. We can plan out the rest of your year in January but for now...don't worry about it. Focus on the OS instead."
I've done close to 2000 SP's in the last 18 month. I know from that process that shit happens, race schedules change, etc, and there's often not a lot of utility in planning anything farther out than about 6mo.
Coach,
You are totally right. Life happens! I had hopes of trying to join into an EN Key Race, and the Rev 3 was about as close as it gets for me (except IMLP). My 8th grade daughter informed me that she would be going into final exams the following week and a long weekend away like that would not set up well for her study schedule. So, I will enjoy the OS and loop back later!
There is a 5K 12/7 that I would like to seriously kick out of the water. I had a great 5K today - 24.31-ish - chip time is not posted yet. According to Garmin, 7.45, 7.52 then 8.02. All in all, I was pretty happy, but would like to better than in December as the courses are similar. Would training for that fit into the November OS plan?
This is my first year with EN and I am learning as I go.
Thank you,
Beth
After reading other athlete threads, I am feeling directionless, planless and not sure how to be best maximizing my membership. I plan on joining the Nov OS as most half marathons here are wrapping up, and the last is 11/3 in Corning, NY which is a schlepp from Rochester, NY (which means I won't be able to target a half before February).
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thank you!
Beth
I am coming out of a two week run rest as I have a bit of PF. Trying to keep it in check (already been to chiropractor, have lots of stretches and foam rolling toys as well as new shoes and inserts). A bit concerned as I am to load up half marathon plan on 2/2 for race on 3/23. Do you think I can realistically turn the training around, or should I shoot for another race (4/27 --> more of a challenging course, probably not a PR as the 3/23 would be). What are your thoughts?
Thanks!
Beth
Probably best to register for the later race so you don't have a date on the calendar that tempts you to rush your recovery.

Is racing a 1/2 a good tactical move in prep for the rest of the season and thinking long range for IMMT next year?
Thanks!
Training for and racing half marathons is always a good idea. Don't overthink the timing of it. Just find and pick a race that works well for your personal schedule. And don't worry about how a half marathon fits in with your plans for next year. That will sort itself out, plenty of time for that.
Coach,
5/25 is out. My husband is a professor at one of our local universities and graduation weekend is the same weekend as the race. I will have to look around and see what I can find without worrying about timeframe.
In the meantime, I am finished with the NOS tomorrow. Shall I just load up a swim plan until I figure out my life? First tri isn't until 6/22.
Thank you!
Beth
A few HM's I found (that will potentially work) are 8/23 (which is one week after HIM, so need your thoughts on that) and 9/1, 9/7, and 10/20. Not exactly the early HM you had in mind.......
I definitely don't recommend the 8/23 HM. The others are fine. Just pick whatever race works best for you, timing-wise.
A few things -- one, I have a message in my inbox to set up a live chat, let me know how to go about that. Two, I have to shelf my OLY 6/22. My uncle passed last month and his memorial service is that weekend. Three, I think I have tendonitis in my foot. I plan on rebooting swim camp to start again this week. It is best if I limit myself to swim / bike with one run a week depending on how my foot feels. Any suggestions on how to structure that within the swim camp. or is there another plan I can load?
thanks!
Hi Beth,
Patrick does the call so please reach out to him directly. Ok on the Oly, are you doing anything to replace that race with another? As for the foot, just skip/ignore/replace with a bike the runs scheduled in the Swim Camp plan. Good luck!
Is an OLY necessary this season?
Thank you!
Nothing is necessary, it's all just a game, and don't think that anything you do this season is a prerequisite for success next season. Just find any races or events that sounds like fun, that work for you this season. Do those and then we'll think about next season.
I am coming to the end of SC. I think I have tendonitis in my foot, and am seeing an ortho on Tuesday. What shall I load for the coming weeks? I am able to run 2x a week for 2.5-3. I can bike and swim without foot pain. Should I go to a bike focused plan until this foot thing resolves? I am in NY state, and can realistically expect to be on the trainer for the next 4-6 weeks unless we get a huge breaking the weather.
Thank you!
Yes, BF plan and listen to your foot with regards to the running.
So the diagnosis by my ortho is a wicked case of plantar fasciitis. At this point I can swim and bike, but no run. Is there a plan I can load that will put me in the pool 3x a week and bike 3x a week or pool 2x and bike 4x?
He thinks I will be road ready by May. Should I be worried that I am not following a HIM plan, with an anticipated race date of 8/17?
Thanks so much,
Beth
Hey Beth,
Sorry to hear that. PF can take a long time to heal so you need to be patient. No worries about your 8/17 race. You have time but it is what it is.
You can load up the Bike Focus plan, dropping the runs and adding swims.
PF is begnning to resolve-ish. I've been doing bikes and swims, mixed in with a day of pool running, and I think I am ready to get on the elliptical once a week. I would like to do the Century ride for the Tour de Cure 6/8. Start HIM plan next week, and follow as written, modifying runs to elliptical and pool, or stay on bike focus?
Thanks so much,
Beth
Move over to the HIM plan vs Bike Focus. And maybe pick 2-3 of the HIM Saturday bikes and dial them up to about 4hrs, as preparation for that century. That said, you'll be 100% fine in the century without doing this, but as long as you have that event on the schedule you might as well leverage it to experiment with sitting on the bike and fueling yourself for 4hrs. Those will be valuable lessons that will pay off in the future.
