IM Chatanooga

I'm excited about this race. I was 99% sure next year would be an off year, but now I'm only 90% sure.

The course looks fast...surprising for that terrain, but they found a relatively flat bike and run course.

A number of things are enticing:

50 Kona slots...higher chance for those close enough to sniff a KQ but not quite there.

Downstream swim - benefits the average to below average swimmer (not me unfortunately for this race).

Timing...with only a few weeks between this and Kona...many of the fast AGers will not likely race IMChoo and IMKona so the pointy end of the field may be a bit less pointy.  Couple that with the 50 slots and a KQ starts to look a lot more likely.

On a similar note...I have a contrarian theory as it relates to those hunting for a KQ.  As the new races pop up and folks strategize on how to maximize their chances they will find that everyone else in their shoes is doing the same thing.  As a result, perhaps some of the formerly 'difficult to qualify' races will now in fact be easier.

Discuss.

  • Re Kona --

I know what it's like in among the younger AGs, but I can tell you that in 40-49 AG's you can assume that everyone at the pointy end is very fast, there are many of them, and you need to bring your AAA+++ game to any race. No such thing as cherrypicking

    Now, get off my lawn!!

  • Not knowing anything about Chattanooga, it looks like it passes the hotel test. i.e. there are hiltons, marriots, Sheratons, and holiday inn express all near main street.

I'm probably not in for this race next year, but this offers me an IM branded race 8 hours away from my house which is nice. Next closest IM race is IMLP at about 9:00 but with traffic (95N stinks)...My point is, a race in this location might again ease up on the IMLP draw kind of like IMMT did two years ago.
  • Chattanooga is such an awesome city. So glad they got it.

Plus it doesn't hurt that it's only 1.5 hour drive from here too image Wasn't planning on doing a Full next year, but this is a game changer.
  • Rich - Any chance you'd be holding an "unofficial" training camp there for people who do it? Since it's near your family and all??

I thought I had my plan all laid out for next year, but now I'm not so sure!
  • In terms of KQ, lots and lots of talk about IM going to an AG points qualification system instead of current method. You can't just keep adding races indefinitely and have them all roughly have the same number of slots, presumably there's some maximum capacity for Kona that they can't stretch forever.

The 50 KQ slots thing of course though is just a first-year draw, they did the same for Whistler this year to try an draw people from Challenge, expect normal slots the following year if we are still on the slot system.

As for the race itself, I see this as a possible death knell to IMLOU. They serve roughly the same geographic region (~4 hours apart), have very similar swim formats, and from what I gather, Chattanooga is quite a bit more scenic and with a much greater probability of better weather than IMLOU. The average high for IMLOU's date is 89 degrees, the average daily high for Chattanooga's race is 79 degrees. There's a pretty big difference between spending your day in the 70s versus the upper the 80s and 90s.

Considering IMLOU already likely has the slowest sell out on the US circuit, I wonder about it's long term future if this new race takes off. I don't expect LOU to get axed right away, but St George taught us that WTC isn't afraid to pull the plug on venues that are even moderately successful, seems to be their model is sell-out or bust.

I'm actually have lunch with Joanne right now and talking about doing a camp out there along our WI, LT, LP format. I could probably get a good rate on 2x 10yo to work the camp with her...

We know that one of them is a great SAG Assistant....

  • I'm about 6 hours from Chattanooga and have run trail runs up there. Its great and I love the downtown scene. Please have a camp. Its one I could actually come to! I would be glad to do some recon work!
  • Sounds like an awesome location... Weather , hotels , time of year all good!

Love the mention of great road surface... Course sounds fast.

The date is too close to KONA only 2 weeks.

REF KONA slots I thought 50 was the norm? They have 100 at Canada this year and 75 at IMMT..... WTC was bumping them up on the inaugural event like they did for IMTX first year and then pulling the number back to 50.

    Very Interested in IMCHOO
  • I'll definitely do a camp on the course, probably this coming weekend...but next year...if that makes sense. In other words, I'll do back to back to back IMWI, LT, and ChooChoo camps. I'm headed out to Atlanta for Christmas and will try to get up there to scout it out a bit.
  • Tim - good catch...you are exactly right. I misread it to be 50 additional spots, but it is 50 spots total, just like most races.
  • 99% sure I'm in
  • very interesting...I was planning on doing IMOO, but will be flying home from Vegas during signup. I could pull the trigger on this BEFORE murdering myself at 70.3 Worlds. image
  • I think this will be a very fast course. Maybe in for 2014, if not, most likely in for 2015. Maybe one of the EN focus races for 2015?
  • Let me point out that 50 slots is the standard for almost all races. Most first year races get 75-100 slots. Not so with this one for whatever reason. Canada has 100 slots this year.
  • Meandering thoughts on hearing about another new Ironman...Where will it all end ??? There are now 13 North American WTC IM races, 30 around the world... 68,000 competitors, majority or races sell pout in hours or minutes, etc...The big limiter of slots to Kona is the size of the Pier on which the bikes sit. With creative use of the space around the hotel next door, they might be able to get as many as 300 more bikes in there. Let's say an upper limit of 1800 AG slots, apart from pros, lottery, comps to sponsors, etc. ... There is a minimum of 22 slots needed to give one to each AG, but I doubt that would fly with 30-, 40-, and 50 somethings. So let's say 50 is the number needed to keep interest up among the paying customers. That yields a max of 1800/50 or 36 races. Given the pace of new races the past 2-3 years, we are indeed butting up against the day when something other than slots at all IM races will be the way to qualify for Kona... We've already got 3 regional championships, Europe, NA, and Asia-Pacific. Is a two step process in the future? Or maybe two levels of races, some which are qualifiers and some which are not? Or a multi-year process, some rolling method of points earned in multiple races over a 2, 3, or 4 year time frame?

The mind boggles, the wallet empties.

  • Al, Tim, - It is the day before race day here in Kalmar, Sweden, and there are only 30 slots up for grabs...same as the inaugural year...and it is a HUGE success. Whistler did not get 100 because it was the inaugural, they got 100 because that race was conceived overnight to respond to Challenge Pentincton. New York got extra slots the first year because it was also a Championship. IMMT is a designated championship like Frankfurt, hence 75. Figure 50 is the norm, and Chattanooga's 50 will come from Whistler dropping back. 30 races at 50 = 1500 and yes, while a few have more than 50 slots, everyone needs to understand that there are IMs with only 30 or 40. Off the top of my head, I would say Kalmar, Wales, and South Africa are in that category. New York is gone; St George is gone; Regensburg is gone; and Louisville may not survive its contract. I think they hit the ceiling three years ago and all we are seeing now is a shuffling of the deck. Time for me to go turn in my bike and bags...catch you later.
  • Possibly in as well. This looks like a great venue -- Downtown run course probably will be simlar feel to Madison. Lots of restaurant and hotels downtown -- Also kid friendly with Aquarium, Tennessee Valley Railroad museum, Childrens Discovery musuem. Could be a great event. With driving distance for me so I would defintely make the camp if I decide to throw my hat in the ring.
  • This race will be like IMMO. If you qualify for Kona it will be for the following year.
  • I live in Atlanta and just did the Chattanooga Olympic a few weeks ago. One thing to note is that the river swim was cancelled due to a lot of rain which caused unsafe conditions...hopefully this doesn't happen for IM. The bike couse for the oly is an out and back on the highway with one lane closed off on each side. Steady rolling hills throughout the course with a few tough climbs. It looks like the IM course will take us south into Georgia where it flattens out a lot. The run should be fairly flat so no issues there but it can be hot in September in the south. Chattanooga has a great set up of bars, food, hotels, baseball stadium, aquarium, and it's all walkable.
  • Bike Route:

Pulled this off the slowtwitch thread -- Evidently it was posted by the race director Brian Myrick

  • Mark - heads up...you have to be careful with the Map My Ride and Garmin Connect elevation numbers. They are notoriously off. For example...IMMOO says 2800 ft climbing. All of us that did the camp a few weeks ago were getting more than double that...roughly 6K. Ironman uses the mapping numbers. I've heard IMLOU is off by a similar amount.
  • Considering it as well... Awesome to see that the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation is the official charity partner- great charity, and that might be enough to push me over the edge to register!
  • Husband and I have been trying to figure out a second IM in 2014 after Texas in May before this announcement. Was looking at Florida until I read that last year's registration sold out on line in 60 seconds and not interested in making a trip to Florida just to sign up. Holding out on Lake Tahoe until 2015 for multiple reasons, so this announcement made our decision for us. We'll be signing up for IMChoo as soon as they open up registration.

My guess is that IMFL will take a little longer to sell out this year precisely because of the diversions to Chattanooga.

  • Do people think able to wear wetsuit?
Any idea when they open to register?
Rich will the camp be same weekend as IMMT?
Husband doing that and I am childcare/Sherpa/Cheering
    Any thoughts on water chop?
    I am NOT a swimmer!!!!
  • Carolyn, I'm not a swimmer either, but I think this will be an easier swim as it is downstream. I really doubt it will be wetsuit legal, though.
  • Registration opens Sept. 4. Swim will favor non-swimmers. Go for it!
