Rudy Project

Rudy Project has offered all Kona qualifiers a helmet and glasses for $65, to be picked up in Hawaii. You have to agree to wear them during the race. Nice marketing and PR strategy, since they tout that they are the most worn at Kona. Anyway, I need advice, since this is a great deal. The helmet choices are Wingspan, Sterling, and Windmax. The glasses offered are Rydon, Noyz, Hypermaskperformance, and Ability, all of which retail for $209.99.

Please advise if you have an opinion on any of these. The offer is only good for a little while.

  • Love my (pink fluo) wingspan helmet and Noyz glasses. The big question about the glasses is which lenses come with the deal. I have the photochromic red and really like them. Great for cloudy days and sunny alike.

Do you have to wear their kit also?

PS - I also have a Sterling and like it as well.
  • Kate, that is a great deal for the helmet alone. I use the Sterling for my Road helmet and like it. I use the Wingspan for my aero helmet and LOVE it. I actually think my Wingspan is more comfortable than any road helmet I have ever worn with great visibility and awesome cooling. If you had no bike helmet and asked me for a recommendation for what helmet to use at Kona, I would say the Wingspan. And that is a stupid cheap price for it... I don't know anything about the glasses.
  • Kate - I have the Rydon sunnies and they rock. No slippage down the nose, hardly ever fog up, I love 'em. At that price for everything, its like stealing.
  • FYI Kate - last October, Rudy Project did a similar promotion and gave Wing Span Helmets away (no glasses included). You had to sign up in advance w/ the understanding that you would wear the RP helmet in the race.

I arrived on Wednesday mid-day - and the first stop I made, even before checking into the condo, was at the RP "store" (which was a vacant retail shop that they rented for the week, not far from the finish line). By the time I arrived, most of the helmets were gone - as they were available on a first-come/first-served basis. As I understood it, they were giving helmets to athletes regardless of whether they registered in advance or not. My buddy Larry came in Thursday morning - we went to RP and there were zero helmets left.

I spoke w/ RP folks well in advance and was assured that both of our helmets would be available. It was only when we were in Kona that we learned it was fc > fs.

Not complaining at all - but if you are banking on the helmet and glasses for the race, go as early as you possibly can and be prepared for specific sizes and colors to be limited or out-of-stock. i used a RP Wingspan helmet that I brought with me - as I would not switch to a Wing Span and use it for the first time on race day.

    Just my .02 cents...

Congrats > enjoy Kona - it is magical!!
  • The Rudy wingspan I was given a few years ago wouldn't come close to fitting my fat noggin. The giro advantage II is the one I roll with, as it seems to be the only one that'll fit. I won't buy a helmet sight unseen (without trying it on), so I'm somewhat limited by my choices-although those choices are growing in my area.
  • Awesome.... Just ordered a new Orange Wingspan and Yellow Hyper mask glasses.... Needed a new Wingspan anyway since mine gave its life to save mine a month ago!
  • Thanks for your input, everyone! I did order the Wingspan helmet and Noyz glasses, which come with red, blue, and clear lenses. In looking at their site, it said Rydon was for small faces, and Noyz for small and medium. Hope they have that right! And who's to be the judge of how big your face is? LOL.
