Tech help needed!

OK, since this is the "geezer" forum, I'm asking a tech question here, since you might understand! I'm trying to put my IMLP race report on the race report forum, but it doesn't seem to want to take it. I did a Word attachment, but when I preview it, nothing is there. Can anyone take me "step by step" through the process? Also, does a photo need to go on separately?

  • Kate, try to copy and paste the report, rather than attach it.
  • Here's how I post photos (there are other ways, I know, which involve posting the photo on the web, like @ Flickr, then making a link to the photo):

    • Download the photo from camera to my computer (for me, Mac iPhoto)
    •  When writing a reply to the EN forum, Click on the "Attachments" arrow - this is on the right, down below the Submit-Cancel-Preview buttons
    • Select "Choose File" (on the left), which gives me a dialog box to choose the photo from its location on my computer
    • This opens up a bunch of choices; place the cursor where I want the photo to go, then select the icon below "Insert Image"
    • And Bob's Your Uncle, or if you're French, Voila. (What do French Canadians say?)

I'm going to try that Paper Clip icon to see if I can attach a Word file to this Reply; the link should follow this sentence. HR Testing.docxSome people post reports to their blogs or other sites; you can create a link to that using the little chain icon on the top of the Reply window, between the Paper Clip and the "Custom Links".

Well, that was way too complicated for me to want to do it on a regular basis. Besides, on the receiving end, you have to open the file in a separate program. Cutting and pasting is much easier.
  • Thanks for trying to help. The copy-paste option only pasted one paragraph. I tried several times. I tried an attachment, and that didn't work. I need the text and photos. Frustrating! I don't have a blog to link this to, so that isn't an option. Arrrghhh!

I guess I'll try some more...

  • Sometimes there's "invisible" formatting in MS Word that doesn't copy and paste well. If its pure text (ex, no real formatting like bold/italics, indentations, etc), then I'd copy and paste to notepad, then copy and paste from notepad to the forum. Notepad should eliminate all that funky formatting you might not see.
  • After several hours of trying and retrying, I think I got the RR loaded. What a hassle! Is it because I use a Mac and this site is geared toward PC? Getting the photos from iphoto was particularly problematic, since they came out all called jpeg, and this site couldn't just put them where I wanted.

    Thanks again for your help!
  • Kate - I use the Mac without hassle to deposit photos on this forum using the method I described earlier. Expanding on that a bit ... the first bullet says "Download the photo from camera to my computer (for me, Mac iPhoto)" Between that and the second bullet (which describes what to do in the Reply window to insert the photo, here's what I do:

    • Choose Export from the File menu
    • Default option is JPEG, which I go with. Also, Medium Quality, and Medium size. This helps reduce the file size, which may be an issue in trying to get a photo from your computer to EN Forum. Sizes between 50 and 400 kb seem to be a good compromise between visibility and ease of trnsmission.
    • "export"  (which seems a lot like "save" to me) to a specific location in the Finder, from where you'll be getting it in the Attachments section near the bottom of the EN Forum Reply window (which you get to from hitting "Add Reply"

Oh, using "Quick Reply" is not the way to go.

  • Hummm , Geezer forum never thought I'd think of myself as one image
  • Thanks for the advice! Al, I ended up needing to rename the files from iPhoto and put them onto my desktop. This Forum process kept replacing photos, since they all had "jpeg." What a surprise to see something different in the "Preview" feature than on the composing one! I have used your "Export" technique on a newsletter I write, and tried the "Good" "Better" "Best" feature, too, to find the one that would work without being too large a file.

@David - You are only a "Geezer" if you think you are!
