The Cool Impossible

I just read The Cool Impossible by Eric Orton. He's the guy that wrote born to run & in this new book he talks about training yourself to run properly. In the book there are prescribed strength exercises using a slant board and some other tools along with a general guideline program. I'm thinking of trying this leading up to the OS. I was wondering if anyone else has read the book or followed the ideas he's talking about?

This was a switch from my 4 mm drop kinvara shoes which I like. These have much less cushioning, but feel lighter and seem to help me transition better from plant to take off. It was also interesting that I could feel my big toe actually engaged in my running. I've been doing the slant board exercises of the program for a few weeks now, but I'm not sure whether these or just being more focused have changed my form. I've also lost weight which has helped the process. The short 4 mile run felt smooth and less taxing even though I did
a late night bike last night. I'll run in these a few more times this week, then switch back to the Kinvara's to compare.
  • Yes, very interesting. I am one of those people that has pointed the toe down toward the ground, but this didn't happen in distance running. I began doing this in high school when doing sprints for baseball. It then continued into my main sport, basketball, but I also trained with strength shoes http://www.strength-shoes.com/ a lot so my calves were constantly being overloaded. Once I started triathlons, I had to adjust something or I was way leaned over in a full out sprint. It took me so long to be able to run over an hour and not be completely gassed. At this point, I feel this is closer to how my body normally wants to run so I'm giving it a try. Thanks for the article--interesting---but man it's long.

If you like Kinvaras but want less shoe then try the Grid Type A5.  The Kinvaras are way to "squishy" for my taste regardless of being a low drop platform. The A5 is 4mm drop with a 14mm heel stack.
