Jonathan Brown's Macro Thread

Hello Coaches,

Can you help me plan my races next year?  And to maximize my training to hit my goals.    A little background: I told my partner that i would not do another IM next year.  I would like to hold up that bargain (boy this is hard when i see everyone posting IM info).   So i would like to plan my next year with HIM's to help get me faster for an IM in 2015.  How does this sound?  And how many HIM is too many/too little to get me faster.

My focal points for the HIM is killing the bike.  and to rock the run after (sub 2 hour).  I believe that my bike needs the most help over the next few months.   I have been looking at my bike times and data (including power), and it sucks.  I need to increase my power and my ability to stay consistent on the hills.  (BTW, hills are my enemy).

Can you all help?  I really need help to get faster.  I am tired of being a slug and a back of the packer.

You've come to the right place . The best way to work this:

    1. Take the Season Planning Survey under the Training Tab above. In that survey...
    2. Give me 2-3 HIMs that you're thinking about. As a Virginia athlete, an HIM in early June, late July, and mid-late September would be best, if 3 is your number.

I'll take that and plan some stuff out for you. You'll also see a bunch of season planning stuff coming out from me, for the entire team, shortly so please pay attention to that as well

  • I am looking at the following races as of today:
    1) Montecello Man - First weekend in May (date not set) (maybe depending on the team's HIM that will be picked)
    2) TBD
    3) Rev3 Cedar Point - First week in September (Date not set) (potential)

Here is the wrench to the spokes.... I maybe (should be) moving to Minneapolis in May/June time frame.

Side note, I was also looking at doing the Wisconsin IM's Camp weekend. I know i am not racing that race, but i want to get familiar with the course since that will be my race for 2015.

Key EN HIM will be on the west coast, I'm leaning towards Wildflower. Those dates work, especially if you can do a HIM in May BEFORE you move. FYI, that 2nd race isn't mandatory. A total of 2x HIMs is completely fine.

  • Hey Coach,

So i am doing NYC Marathon on November 3rd. I do want to start the outseason as soon as possible. What do you recommend? BTW, this will be my second marathon in 7 days. Im doing Marine Corp a week before NYC. :-) Neither race is a race, both are relaxing "fun" runs.
  • Highly recommend you take 2wks completely off after that marathon and then we can talk about sliding you into the OS. I think you could just pick up with whatever week everyone else is in, probably no need for you to test formally.

  • Hello Coach,

So i made a mistake on when my first race is... It is actually a week later. Should i postpone my Swim camp for a week and stick with my JOS for an additional Week?

Yes, do that, staying in the JOS for another week.
  • Hey Coach,

I hope you are doing well. So i trying to figure out what to do... I am now only doing Princeton in September 21st. I am not doing Morgantown since Rev3 is not putting it on this year.

Can you help me with my training plan?
  • Hey JB,

Please go to the Triathlon Season RoadMap link under Training above. Take the survey and I'll plan it out for you. Thanks.
  • Hey Coach,

I am currently planning for FY15. My main race is IMCHOO... Currently i am not sure which HIM should be doing. Please help. I would like plenty of time to prep for IMCHOO.

I believe I'm putting the Choo Crew into their IM training plans on about 7/6/15. So racing an HIM in mid to late June would be ideal. Then I prefer that people not race a HIM within ~6wks of their Ironman.

Of these two (a late June and...whatever that math is above HIM in mid-August?) the late June HIM would be preferred, as this would be your goal/target race that guides you through the OS and spring.

  • How about EagleMan on June 14th? My big issue is the costs associated with travel.

That's fine. I would have you either start the IM plan a bit early, or do a few weeks of the GF plan.

  • Hey Coach,

I need some help. so the last two weeks has been really bad for me. Between work, health issues, travel, and family in town. I have not done squat with workouts. Since i am in Week 8 of Nov Outseason. What do you recommend? So i stick with my current outseason plan? or should i restart outseason in January?

Maybe do the best you can over the next ~2wks and then restart the OS in Jan 5 but picking up with ~Wk4 vs Wk1? In other words, do you feel like you need to go all the back to square one or would you be ok with restarting in wk 4?
  • i feel like week 4 is fine with me. I am not completely out of shape. I did shorter bike workout on Saturday and did the run workout on Sunday. I am just concerned that i will be behind the eight ball on my training.

Ok, then start on wk4 vs wk1

No, not really. Regardless, it is what it is. Just adjust the plan and drive on

  • Hey Coach,

I adjusted and this time around thing are going "better" I am not missing weeks.. i am just missing a work out here and there. Bloody work. It tends to get into the way.

So how should i adjust the rest of my year based on this adjustment to my outseason?

When you finish the OS, do a few weeks of the GF plan but start the HIM plan on the date that I indicated for you. Then follow the TSR as is from there. Good luck!
