Trying race day breakfast?

I think I have my course nutrition dialed in pretty well, but I'm nervous I haven't tried the full IM breakfast and timing of it. With RR#2 this weekend, is it worth doing the whole get up at an ungodly hour and eat or does it not even matter since I won't be swimming first? I've tried all the different components of my race day breakfast, just never at the same time because I don't usually take in that many calories and never with the timing I'll have race day.  How do you guys try out race day breakfast?

  • Train like you fight, fight like you train = yes I have an even better one for you. I skip getting up early as I put a premium on sleep but I use my race day nutrition plan once a week on a weekend as I go longer on a weekend.
Doing so = I know it works bottom line no questions asked!
  • Rachel,

practice the breakfast routine. Not because you're trying to PR the RR, but, more realistically, because when you do it on Sept 8th, it won't be anything foreign or new.

How do I do it?  2 Ensures about 2am, small bagel/PB/Honey/Banana and coffee at about 4:30, Perform up until ride time at 6:45 or 7.

  • Rachel What are you planning to eat as a pre-race Breakfast?
  • My breakfast is yogurt (don't worry- I've tried this and no GI issues) with white rice, a banana, and 1 bottle Perform. Then about 15-30 min before start a gu and sipping on sports drink. I have Crohn's disease so my stomach is picky, but have had good success with the yogurt + rice at HIM.
  • If you don't get up early, which is fine, don't eat the same number of calories. Eat only part of your planned IM breakfast so that you are a little hungry as if you just did your swim so that you can start your feeding and drinking right at the start of your bike RR; 10 OR 15 MINUTES in.
  • Rachel - given that you have Crohns I recommend that you not try to take in more calories than you know you can absorb. You don't need to simulate a full IM breakfast. Many of the client/athletes  I work with ( I am a Sports Dietitian) that have IBD or IBS  will cut back on quantity of food for their pre IM breakfast and they are fine. I think there is too much hype about the need to take in mega calories before an IM. Pay attention to your diet through out the week. This is really when you are topping off your tank because you are not exercsing as much.
