Anyone ever changed their bearings in a PT hub?
So today's ride was 3x15' at 95-100%. First set goes OK. Halfway through 2nd set, power data starts getting all wonky. But I think it could just be an RPE/Watt/HeartRate disconnect.....especially since my rides seems to have been pretty binary these past few weeks. Either really good, or really bad. Anyhow, I figure maybe it is the batteries....so I figure I will change them out tonight.
This evening I go to change out the batteries, and I notice that the axle doesn't spin very well. In fact, I can feel what seems to me to be 'grinding'. Not good.
I have had the wheel for a couple years now, so I know it is well, well out of warranty. That being said, has anyone done a bearing replacement on their own or at their LBS? A quick search on the net yielded some instructions on WeigthWeenies, as well as a YouTube video showing the non-drive side bearing being replaced.
Anyone in The Haus ever done it?
Thx,
Joe
PS - kind of critical as IMMoo is 2 1/2 weeks away.....

I did it about a year ago. Used the Park Tool website and supplemented with some YouTube stuff for instruction. Wasn't that hard, but i went slow thru the steps, meticulously, so that i wouldn't mess my wheel up.
Like most big'ish bike fixes, I can't offer any tips because I only do X job 1 time and it'll be too long before I do it again.
My advice....whether you acknowledge it or not, IMMoo is in our heads and I'd worry about inexperienced hands fixing something that is so vital to your race day. LBS all the way. Cartridge bearings are pretty cheap and it's a quick fix for the experienced wrench in the shop. Just make sure you don't get the rookie.
NOTE: I'm assuming that a PT Hub has cartridge bearings that are pretty accessible. I'd call them tomorrow to find out if you need to order them and have them delivered quickly.
BTW, I had the battery thing happen on today's ride. Apparently I went for an hour and had an IF of 3.42.
As to the PowerTap issue: now that the wheel is spinning freely, I gave it a 30-minute whirl on the trainer this morning. Initially it looked a little 'jumpy', but then seemed to settle down. I did three intervals: .70, .80, and 1.00 IF. All seemed to be stable (I haven't had a chance to look at the data in WKO+ though).
The proof will be how it goes tomorrow for Race Rehearsal #2.
