Problems w/ sweet taste

Major meltdown at IM Mt Tremblant last week. This was my 4th IM (3rd with EN) and my worst. Full race report to be done in a few days but ...I realize now how much I screwed up my nutrition.

I've been using Infinit for all 4 IMs. This year (and in others), I have a tough time with the sweet taste after about 4 hours on the bike, which continues to get even worse over the next 2 hours (~ 6:15-6:30 bike split). I don't mind it early but by mile 70/80, I don't want it anywhere near me. The problem is even worse on a hot day as it was in IMMT last Sunday. I do have the flavor set low (3/10).

Has anyone else had this problem with "sweet" drinks (gels, etc) late in IM bike? Should I get rid of all the flavor? Should I switch to another product? Thanks in advance!

  • I use Infinit for the bike and the run. These are the same except the flavours are different and the run one has caffeine in it.
I have the flavours dialled right down and salt up (600 mgs per 750 mls bottle) so they taste a bit salty (ie not sweet).
For the last hour on the bike I use the run formulae so it is a change of flavour.
    Never had taste/sweetness fatigue.
  • Kind of like you telling the doctor it hurts when I hit myself on the head with a hammer. The answer is don't hit yourself on the head with a hammer.

I had the same results with a product and switched. There are many choices out there drop Infinit and find something else. Try IM Perform for example.
  • I had the same problem with sweetness fatigue.  Tried lots of things including Infinit, EFS, etc.  I've been using the Skratch Labs mix for the past year or so and it works incredibly well for me.  I can drink that stuff all day long... even when it's warm.  On long rides I supplement with solid food (Honey Stinger waffles usually).  The only downside is having to come up with a race plan using your own stuff.

  •  Venkatesh - try going self supported for the first 55 miles with Skratch Labs or Osmo nutrition along with bites of salted potatoes in your bento box. Then at the half way  go to course supported fuel, no chewing, get your gut ready for the run. I like to carry TicTacs for a refreshing burst in my mouth. Plus you can carry extra electrolyte caps in the TicTac container.
  • Ginger may offer some relief to those tired of sweets. While still candy and carb rich it has more of a warming flavor. Used to calm digestive issues and believed to be anti-inflamatory.....Below are 2 products I usually have in the house but I don't use them for racing just enjoy eating them...
