IMCanada Disc or No Disc

This has been on my mind all week and I keep jumping back n forth. After the team EN dinner tonight I still feel like I should take my wheelcover disc off and just ride my HED FR90 (HED FR60 front).

This is a tough bike course with a lot of climbing, much tougher than the old Penticton, IMcanada course. Would love to know any last minute words of advice from EN in terms of what to do. I have 1 more day to decide.

Disc or no Disc?

Comments

  • I'd go with the Disc at all times!
It will give you much more benefit on the straight/downhill sections than you will loose due to the additional weight on the hills.

In order to save any "useless" weight I emptied all my bottles before the climbs. But the hills in IMAT are no longer than 10min and there's an aid-station on top of the hills.

BTW: I once read an article where most of the PROs also claim that they would ride Discs on Kona if it would be legal to do so ... there must be a reason for that image
  • I'd also roll with the disc if it were me. But I'd say I'm only about 70% confident in that decision, not 100% so I totally get your post.

    Good luck either way!
  • What other aero wheel would you use? I'm no expert but if you have a deep rim go with that. The reason is disc are great on flats, rolling or downhills because the weight of the disc combined with pedal stroke creates momentum to help propel you forward. Up hill yiu lose all benefit and actually have to expand more energy to spin the wheel and move the bike
  • I talked to suk. But will give my thoughts again for others to discus.

This course all up or down. Except 30 miles flat. Can lose minutes going up with extra weight. Only lose seconds on flat without disc. Personally i do not want disc speed on downhills for this course because need to be using brakes on most of them.

So i keep hearing folks talking disc all the time. But i am not hearing good science behind the reasons and not afjusting for this whistler course.
  • I am not on the ground and defer to you there and your gut. From looking at the map, IMWH has less gain than IMLP by a couple of hundred feet. For the first 90 miles of the ride, every hill has a downhill (aka "return") and there is a 30 mile flat section in there as well. The last 20 miles has solid climbing (just like LP), where the first 10 miles is worse than the last 10...I am no data geek, but I think that the rolling terrain, and "getting up the first 1/3 to 1/2" of the next hill with a disc wins.

Let us know what you decide!!!!

  • Disk, always, if allowed. You know, I think it's just taper making you think too much
