70.3 suggestions

So-as the dash indicates, I'm likely (but not definitely) out for my A race b/c of a shoulder injury.  Tried swimming last week in open water, and it hurt like a mother the next day. So I have two worries: (1) that I will get out of the water too tired; and (2) that a 1 loop course is now a 2-loop course.  With 4000 people on bikes with no readily accessible brakes, 8 hairpin turns, and no passing zones, I'm worried about a clusterf--k.  I can cycle pain-free, but if I hit the deck again, ouch.  And the fact that I'm worried about it is not a good thing.

That said, this season has not been a loss.  In (less than) a year of EN, my weight has come down from 184 @ beginning of OS to 166 now.  An hour or more of running was unthinkable, and now its a weekly part of life. FTP finally cracked three per kilo and I can see that there's a chance at fast, because I now feel like I'm in good enough shape to get in shape.

So even if I don't get my revenge on the course that I blew last year, next year I want new goals and I now understand the logic to the RnP madness.  I don't want my whole season revolving around this one event.  Injuries make it too depressing if I can't perform the way that I would like.  So here's what I want:

Suggestions for a late spring/early summer 70.3 with a WS legal (and ideally downstream :-)) swim.  Relatively flat bike (total flats bore the s-t out of me--did that on the beach and it was like the trainer.  Plus you haven't smelled hell till you ride by a poultry farm).  Flat run.  (Need to put this on the calendar early to sell the family on it.).

Thoughts?  Eagleman?

  • Chris. Eagleman or kinetic HIM out of lake Anna Rev 3 Williamsburg. That's about all I know for the late spring early summer in the surrounding area.
  • Kinetic was also the first thing that came to mind when I saw your post.  There's also a nice HIM in early June called Blackbear.  Hilly, but beautiful. It's in PA.

  • Does it have to be in the DC area? I have done Kansas twice and highly recommend it. It is the same weekend as Eagleman. The swim has been wetsuit legal every year except 2012. The bike is not flat but it is not brutally hilly either. It favors good EN execution on the bike. The run is pancake flat with the exception of a 600m long hill that you run up and down twice. The vibe is really cool as you run through campsites with tons of spectators. But you don't have to camp - plenty of hotls in the local area or in Kansas City (where I like to stay). It is a super family-friendly race if you want to bring the family. But for you in DC it would be a flight to get there.
  • As far as local that time of year Eagleman an Ironman brand half. It is a nice set up however the swim may or may not be WS and it is not a , say downhill swim.

  • I've done KS with Matt. I really like the race, too. The run is a double loop in a park so crowd support is great. I'd agree the bike uppy/downy is "interesting"...hard but not brutal. The wind is almost always a factor, which has meant the swim has been choppy some years.
