Irritation (Infection?) from heart rate strap

I have developed some sort of skin condition from my heart rate strap. I don't think I have been washing it frequently enough (I know, ewww...). The skin is very sensitive to the touch and the problem is a half dozen or so raised red spots. I started putting some Nystatin cream on it that I am hoping would clear it up if it is a fungal infection. Has anyone else had this happen? I could also put hydro-cortisone on it, would that do anything? I guess I could suck it up and go to a dermatologist but I would prefer to fix this myself.

  • Interesting, I have never washed any of my straps ever and have not heard of this ever happing. You sure the thing was not just to tight and chaffed you; raw skin open can pick up germs.
  • I don't think it was too tight. It still isn't getting any better, I think I will probably go to the doctor image

  • Last year I had the same issue. I had to stop wearing it for a month or so. This year, I've been much more diligent about washing the strap with soap after every use and the problem has improved dramatically. It still rubs every now and then, but I haven't heard anything that completely solves the problem.
  • I have never washed mine... It started to cut me right in the middle of my chest during a long run when I was extra sweaty. I decided to leave it home for while so it could heal. I have not used it since early spring....
