Sore Throat after IM

YAY - PR'd Whistler this past Sunday...and was feeling AWESOME.  Late Monday on the way home started getting a WICKED sore throat.  Couldn't sleep Monday night due to it.  Took advil and some Vicodin..Tuesday still sore. Ended up tossing cookies in the afternoon.  This today, still sore.  this morning had dry heaves after about 20 minutes of being up.

Anyone else have this happen after IM???  how long does it last and any other ideas for treatment?

thanks!

  • Lot of talk / threads about mouth or throat soreness after IM, you are definitely not alone in this. Here's a general blurb on it I pulled from another forum but I'm sure one of the EN docs can chime in and offer a better take:

Causes include mouth breathing and excessive salt. Mouth breathing can lead to the problem in cold air as much as in warm air. (In fact, you'll lose more moisture through your mouth in nose in cold weather than in warm -- for those interested in physiology trivia, this is one of the reasons your nose extends in front of your face.) The best means to minimize this is adequate hydration including rinsing of the mouth during the event when you take in water. The sensation of difficulty swallowing you are describing has a name -"globus sensation". Generally adequate rehydration takes care of the problem. Adaptation to heat and extreme endurance training also decreases the development of this problem. If it does not go away in a day or 2 with adequate rehydration or is severe then it should be checked out.

And also of course, congrats on your race!

  • Thanks Trevor - ill do a search too! Guessing it's the excessive salt! I did more salt tabs than i have ever done!
  • I had a sore throat from the heavy breathing. Some of my local teammates also complained about it.
