Garmin Download issue

I have a Garmin Forerunner 205.  This thing has worked with no issues for two years.  About a week ago I can no longer download my activities to either Garmin Connect or the desktop software.  Connection to my computer is spotty and when it does connect it say the activities or maps have failed to download.

Here is what I have done:

1.  Called Garmin to confirm they are still supporting the 205.  they are.  Garmin recommended I buy a new cradle which I did but still no luck.  they also advised I clean the connection points on the garmin, I did, but no luck.  I might try rubbing alcohal tonight if I have some.

2.  Made sure all software was updated to include USB connection software.

3.  changed out USB cable

4.  Did a hard reset on my Garmin (lost some data, sadly).

The actual Garmin device seems to be working just fine.  I'm 4 weeks out to my race and really don't want to make a change by buying a new garmin.  Garmin said I can send it back and they can look at my 205.  They also said I can turn it in for a credit for a new device.  I might do this after my race but right now, I'm hoping there is some sort of magic button to make this all work again.

Any help or thoughts???

  • Those sound like all the sensible things to me. I had a 305 for a few years, and I can't think of what else I would do. Sorry you're having the issue.

Is there anyway you can just hack into the directory by uninstalling the device software and do a manual file by file import? This is how the Edge 605/705 works...you basically look for a "history" or "activities" folder and drag/drop the files.
  • William,

I know I can find the files on my Joule, let me see if I can find them for the Garmin. For some reason I don't think my Garmin device shows up on my computer like the Joule does.

Seems weird to have to buy a new Garmin just because I can't download the data.

    thanks for the input.
  • It definitely does not show up with the driver software installed...my thought was maybe if you uninstalled the driver software, then it would just look like another USB drive. Just a thought...I have no idea if it will actually work.
  • Here's a long shot. My garmin seemed to work okay but would not accept updates to the OS. It had other issues as well, but it became clear it had a problem when I tried to update the OS. The problem started when the unit was plugged in during a thunder storm, as near as I can tell. I was still within the warranty period, so garmin replaced mine with a refurb. Beyond the warranty period they mentioned that I could get a replacement for $99, I believe. The refurb came with the latest OS and has worked perfectly. So, I'm guessing that maybe a voltage spike from the thunder storm caused damage. Am I crazy?
  • Steve, at this point, anything is possible. I've clearly lost some sort of function even though it works fine while i'm running.
