Sodium Storage/Delivery Systems

I have used Salt Stick dispensers shoved up my aerobars for years, but now I am looking at new bikes and they all have the shifter cables running out the back of the aerobars. Are there any other products that work equally as well? I would be interested in hearing how the rest of you carry and get your salt pills on the bike.

  • Paul, I'm also curious. I have FSA non-carbon extensions and the Salt Stick dispenser won't fit inside the rider end of the bar. So, I wrap the bar in a couple winds of bar tape, then zip tie the dispenser on with two zip ties for each dispenser. When I'm done the dispenser is zip tied parallel to the bar with the dispenser end facing me. I just reach and twist for a salt pill. I have never lost a dispenser, though it is not ideal. I've looked at a lot of bikes and haven't seen a better solution--yet.
  • I also have that dispenser and zip tied it to the aero bar, with a couple extra wraps of electrical tape just in case. has worked just fine.

Also have the Dark Speed Works bag on the top tube, and have even put the salt pills in a tiny zip lock bag in there. It was really no effort in the big picture to get them out of there and put the bag away.
  • For Texas had the S caps in my legs pocket of my Desoto one piece tri suit. Placed caps in a plastic zip lock put it in my pocket. Seemed to do fine. It also allowed me to have some on the run in event of an emergency. I place one cap in each bottle which I think helps with distribution
  • Somewhat hijack here...Can you use non-salt stick tabs/pills in those dispensers? I use the succeed s-caps.
  • Scott....yes. I put the Succeed S-Caps into that thing and it worked just fine.

John- you lost me in going from a zip lock bag to a bottle.  What exactly are you using?  Fumbling with a zip log bag while biking seems like a risk of spilling and/or wrecking while trying to close it up.  BTW - I start the run with a zip log bag full of S caps, Magnesium tabs, and Race Caps.
