Best Distance for Calculator

I'm not sure if this is actually "pace" related...

Was wondering what the best distance to input into the run calculator is.... B/c if I run a 5k I can have my HR avg 190 but for a half marathon I can avg 175.... When I put these numbers into the calculator it doesn't take into account the time that Im holding the HR for... Meaning If 190 is my average HR it uses 190 for the calc and if 175 is the avg it uses 175.  Gives quite a difference in zone numbers.... Help!

  • Welcome,
You can put this here no problem and you can put it into general training forums as well. Most folks will brows the forums for new postings to "check things out."

We test off the 5k and use that number for our Vdot and avg HR as well. When you plug this into your plan your workouts will be based on the numbers you provided; z1, z2, z3, HR etc.

If you are going to race, as your asking about the run calculator, you would reduce your Vdot number by 2/2.5 for a marathon and 1/1.5 for a half marathon. I would not be concerned with HR as much as pacing at this point and hitting your numbers. There is a TON of information in the wiki about this. So long story short in my opinion use the 5k and learn yourself up as you go along.
