Speedsuit/skinsuit recommendations

Hey all -

As I noted in a previous thread, I literally tore my Xterra speed suit / skin suit at my last race.  The zipper didn't unzip as it was supposed to and the cloth gave way as I tried to pull it.  Grrrr.  The customer service guy at Xterra, whom I contacted, "thinks" the zipper has been "upgraded" since I bought my last one 2 years ago, but was neither sure nor specific.

I am hoping to pick one up at a relative bargain as the season ends and places have them left over during the winter.  Which brands does anyone recommend?  As I said, I'm hesitant about getting another Xterra, but they are among the cheapest (when on sale) and I liked how it functioned while it lasted.  Blue Seventy swimwear is great, but I'm not sure if it ever goes on sale.  (OK, I'm a little bit cheap.)  I'm sure there are others (Tyr, etc.)

Thanks in advance.  Wm

  • I've got an Xterra and a Tyr. Tyr is much more substantial, Xterra is like paper. Price reflects the difference. Doubt there's any difference in speed.
  • I have the old XTERRA .02 which is still legal for USAT races, and the Blue Seventy for WTC races.
  • I have the "new" Xterra Velocity and it worked perfectly this past weekend in Vegas. Yes, it is a thinner material, but I too did not want to go broke buying one for the few times I will race with it. That being said, it felt nice on and the breakaway zipper worked perfectly. Good luck!
  • Thanks all.

@Annie Last year at Las Vegas was also one of my early uses of it and it worked fine then. I really don't know why the zipper just hasn't had that "zip" this season...culminating in my little Hulk Hogan act.

@Al How is the release on the Tyr? Is it a zipper on a string like a normal wetsuit or is it another of these "breakaway" zippers?
  • The one I have is a standard zipper. I think the newer model (? Torque Lite) may have a breakaway
  • Or, you can do like me, Kiwami Amphibian and not worry about it. Solves the cost problem with minimal to no time loss.

  • My kids wear a Kiwami. Nice ITU style suits. Do you wear one of those for HIM type distances?
