Scotty 2 Hotty's Macro Thread

I'm still in that hangover period after Ironman Wisconsin, and since this is my first I'm just not sure if it's normal to be itching to race again or if I just have issues (probably a little of both). To give you a little background, since I know you coaches have TONS of athletes that you deal with - I'm 33 years old, 3 young kids, and in April I quit my job and started my own financial planning practice. I absolutely LOVED IMWI and would do an IM every year if I could make it work with family and the business. However, a year ago I told my wife that I would just do 1 IM and then I would drop it for a while until the kids were older. It's only been 4 days, so I haven't talked with her about possibly doing another one next year, although I have tossed the idea out there casually.

So the reason I created this thread is because I am not sure what next year is going to look like. I may just work on speed and do a whole bunch of Olympic Tris. But I have it in the back of my mind that if I can get the business to a good level there's a slight chance I could convince my wife to let me do IMTX in May. There's still spots available and it's a EN Team event, so I would love to do it. So I guess where I need guidance is where do I go from here. I am one of those people that needs a goal to try and hit and right now I feel a little lost, b/c I have no goal.

I guess the other part of that question is, when do I jump back into training? I set my alarm to run this morning (4 days after), but turned it off in the middle of the night b/c I wanted more sleep. I have heard Patrick talk about giving your body plenty of time to recover or your body will make you take a break later on (maybe in a month or 3 months, but it will eventually catch up to you). So when do I load the next plan and what should it be?

Scott, please read this ebook, I think it will answer some questions for you:

Personally, Ironman will always be around and I think you should step back, take care of business, the family, reset your head and then talk about next year. You have plenty of time, in other words.

  • Yes true solid advice by Rich, cool down, reset, then rebound to what fits your lifestyle. One tool that works for me and for other peeps you see in the haus is forecasting a season 1 yr ahead. Does two things for myself 1) Keeps you focused  2) If you are an IM 'er it keeps the post race blues to a minimum as you will be working on the "What's next" factor. Enjoy your post IM time and ps, I see your building a family posse (hummm I wonder why !)
  • So I have really lazy (tri-wise) since my IM in September. I have been active in other ways.....soccer & basketball, but I haven't been on the bike or ran too much, and I haven't swam since Wisconsin. Life/Business have made my schedule difficult but really it's just been my laziness. I am mid Nov OS and feel like I have not done a very good job. I don't have any races narrowed done for next year, so I have some flexibility with my schedule. So my question is, should I continue with my current plan or try and do-over with the Jan OS, since next year is really just about getting faster for me, there's not really an A race that I have on my schedule as of right now. Thanks!
