half distance race before IM
RnP and all you smart folks,
I know this has been covered before but I can't find it: half distance timing before the full.
Specifically I'm planning to race IM Austria in 2014 (June 29) and I'd like to do a half before this race. I've raced a half before a full anywhere from 8-11 weeks out in 2 out of 3 of my IM races and I did better when it was 11 weeks out (but at that point I was more experienced and had EN- so I don't know if the timing mattered). I'm debating a half distance race (Bassman) or the half-lite Devilman (a bit shorter) both scheduled on the same day- May 4 - this would be 8 weeks before Austria. I also know that you don't need to do a half before a full and proved that when I did an Oly 3 weeks before IM Wisconsin and had a pretty good day.
I'm aging up to the 60-64 group and I have a very, very heathy perspective on recovery and what I can absorp as I get older. Also I know I've got to get in 2 RR before Austria and coordinate this with timing a half distance race.
So - RnP and all you other smart folks- what should I do? Which race or try some shorter stuff and skip a May 4 race?
As always I appreciate the input.
Dave
