calf pain with speed

I have not completely healed my right calf since "pulling" the muscle in March 2012 doing cycling intervals.  Since then, I have rested, done PT, taken a ton of Motrin, done 2 Ironmans, stretched, and rested some more.  I have reinjured, or exacerbated the initial injury, 3 times over the last year.   Each time I had gotten back to running/cycling at a moderate pace, but got hurt pushing >85%.  This year I was unable to do the traditional EN training due to the injury, and was not able to run from mid-July until IMWI.

I will redo the PT/Sports doc assessment, and plan to rest for at least a month or two.  My question has to do with potential contributions of my bike set up, or running shoes.  Anyone have this problem that was solved by redoing a bike fit, or changing to shoes with less of a drop, or any other equipment changes?  It may mean the difference in doing EN-style training or not.

  • Man that is a long time to deal with an injury.

I have had calf pulls, then who hasn't, from speed work from running and to a minor bit biking but not as bad as what you have going on. Perhaps both activities play off each other and this keeps you injured.
I have went to a foot Dr who made me custom orthotics to balance my foot strike and for the bike I bought stiffer bike shoe inserts that was suggested to me during a bike fit.
The only other thing I might offer is that you may have a stiff foot, inflexible ankle causing the strain on the calf.
