Naked or Covered

So IM Chesapeakeman is this coming Saturday. Current water temp is 72 degrees and over night lows will be around 50-60 for next three days. So should I go with full wetsuit or sleeveless

Comments

  • For me I would go full for 2 reasons... 1. I know I can handle 72 degrees for an hour 2. I'd be 1-3minutes faster.... I wouldnt go sleevelss until 75ish degrees..

FOR YOU.... I know your a fish and probably heat up a lot more than me...I also know your a lot more used to sleeveless..... I gotta vote sleevelss!
  • FULL. It's faster than a sleeveless and 72 is not too warm. But that's just me and I'm not a fish.
  • Couple questions
    1. Do full suits heat you up much more then sleeveless?
    2. Would being a "heavy sweater" change your answer?

Water temp will probably be around 72-74. Is that considered warm?
  • I think it depends on how fast a swimmer you are - I forget what your anticipated 2.4 mile time is. But if it's less than about 66-68 minutes, you're probably working fairly hard, and would risk overheating in a full. While you might get a *little* advantage from the sleeves, the faster you are to begin with, the less advantage you get.

The fastest time I had in an IM swim was about 66 minutes, in Madison in 05. The water was close to 75 F, and I felt uncomfortably warm in my full DeSoto. Also, I noted my HR was maybe 15% higher than it normally would have been while swimming. I don't think it affected my race in the long run, certainly not as much as the wind and 95F temps did.

IMO, if you're a swift swimmer, you would probably want to choose comfort (sleeveless) over a little more speed; if you are a slow swimmer, a full is the way to go.

    2. Would being a "heavy sweater" change your answer?     YES  more important to stay cooler

Yep that is on the warm side for someone in a fullsuit who is going to swim as hard as you!   If I can save 1-3 minutes going fullsleeve your probably talking 1min or less.... Is it worth overheating, dehydrating???  Like I said for me I usually swap to sleeveless in training in the mid 70's for comfort.

  • What is a temp one would wear a full wetsuit
  • Not sure if I would say I'm working harder then anyone else during the swim. My stroke is pretty proficient so would think that would allow me to work less. Recently bought suit because was afraid water temp would be cold due to low temps. Have never swam 2.4 in a full suit. Not sure if would have been able to anyways.
  • John, I am a heavy sweater, but I go full from about 72 down, sleeveless for 72 to 76 long course, and shorty for the barely legal USAT sprints from about 75 to 78.
  • Full, if only to avoid sea nettle stings!
  • Based on air temps and dropping water temps, I'm gonna go full suit. Will be interesting as i have never swam in a full
