RR1 being impacted by weather. Should I compress to one day for S/B/R?

Will likely need to adjust for weather. Friday is out here in Arkansas -- swim very unlikely due to rain/storm predicted.

Considering compressing all of RR1 into one day. Would look like an early 4,400 yard swim (maybe 5am to sneak in the back gate at the club if the weather clears by that time Saturday morning). Then a 2 lap, 56 mile per lap ride, with an hour run after.

This is my first RR with your program. But all in all I don't see any issues, other than a long day.

Do you see any concerns about compressing the first RR into one day?

Trying to leave Sunday open for rest.

Thanks

  • Pat,

The WSM or Coaches may have a different opinion, but here is my $.02.  The essence of the RR is get a feel for your bike/run pacing and nutrition.  As a result, I'd cut back on the swim to say 2200 yards if you are going to do all 3 in one day. Then do the 100 mile bike and 6 mile run.  You are still going to be risking digging a big hole for yourself.  You'll have plenty of time to get some longer swims in before your race, but you don't want to get too exhausted now while you still have a good 6 weeks of training to go.  Hope this helps.

  • @Bruce, excellent answer and spot on....really curious to hear how it went for you Pat!!!
  • Friday was a total wash out. Pools were open when I left work for my commute but I would not have started till around 6pm and with the continuing rain motivation was at an all time low. Plus I needed to prep for the ride.

Saturday morning I did a 2 x ~56 mile course out of North Little Rock east in what is Mississippi delta -- flat open fields and roads like butter. Had company for the first lap but on my own for the second. Pretty steady for watts on the first lap, but the 10-15 MPH wind was a bugger when on a 9 mile run from the out-and-back turn around. Just watched the watts but still found it more difficult to keep steady. Second lap started OK but the more I thought about that 9 mile stretch I knew what was in store. By the turn-around I had 84 miles in and was tired so that next 9 into the wind (now steady at 15 with gusts to 20-25) was slow in the open farm land.

Planned 6 bottles of mix and that almost held, but had to stop at a gas station on the way back for a 30oz Powerade. Glad I did. When I got back I was only down 1 pound and that is huge for me (big sweater). Overall I could have done with 7 bottles. The rest of the nutrition was pretty good (short a bar or so), but felt really good on the run. In the end lost another lb on the run -- the sun was hot by afternoon so no surprise -- and that after drinking ~40+ oz between a concentrate bottle and water. That's not bad for me in the heat.

Overall on the bike I think I'm a little optimistic about my watts targets. I have a local popular 100 mile tour next week into the Arkansas hills (mostly rolling with one 800 ft climb). I think I'll avoid the peoloton and work on watt pacing again but with a little lower target to see if I can get more steady over the ride.
  • Pat, that execution is excellent, huge lessons learned on the nutrition. Dial it back by just 5% and see how that goes. Also, keep up the nutrition!!!! Smart to stop and plan ahead...ALWAYS thinking ahead...and be safe on that ride!!!
