Bottle Ejection

I've been experimenting with a single bottle mount under my saddle.  I bought a little gizmo shaped like a "T."  It attaches to the seat rails and the bottle cage attaches to the it.  I am using a profile design bottle cage that turned up in my basement among my random bike parts.  By the way, speaking of random bike parts, somebody mentioned that they needed some TRP brake parts--I have a spare rear TRP rear brake if that will help anyone.  Just give me an address.  Okay, back to the point: As you might expect, the bottle ejects nicely whenever I hit a road obstacle--railroad tracks, bridge joint, gutter, etc.  Now, I used to use zip ties to hold the bottle and it seemed like they absorbed some of the shock and reduced the number of ejections, but the ties eventually broke from fatigue so I went to a commercial set up.  I like everything about it--the angle, the simplicity, the durability, but not the ejections.  I guess my question is, is there any cage out there that doesn't eject bottles?  I'm guessing the answer is no in which case I will just use a frame mount and pay the aero penalty.

  • Have you tried an XLab Gorilla cage? I use them in my training setup (double-bottle behind the seat) and have yet to have a single launch.
  • Specialized Rib Cage works well too.
  • x2 on Gorilla cages. Get one and that's the end of your ejection problems.
  • I have the gorilla cages and still get bottle ejections. The roads around me are very rough though. Nothing so sad as going back to get your ejected bottle and seeing the precious fluid pouring into the road after getting run over by a car.

  • Dang Larry, those must be rough roads. I feel like I could mount my Gorilla cages upside down, load them with 24 oz bottles and still not get an ejection. I've had them for years with ZERO ejections. I have some PD cages that are pretty good but still get an occassional ejection from the latter.
  • X5 on Gorilla Cages. HOWEVER, I will say that the Perform bottles they hand out on the IM course are more flimsy than the training bottles we all use and even my beloved Gorilla cage lost one of those on the course at IMMT (mounted in between the aerobars).
  • All, it was close, but I pulled the trigger on the Gorilla bottle cage. I bought black because it was cheaper than red or white, and it looks manly. Anyway, I'll let you know how the bottle ejections go.
