Parasthesias/tingling at the end of an IM

The last half of the run at IMLP, I was experiencing some parasthesias (tingling) in both arms diffusely.  No specific(radicular)pain except total body IM ache.  It continued after the race for about an hour or two until I was well into recovery mode(shower and a meal).  I had plenty of sodium.  I was doing just Perform and PB gels and no water.  I have read at least two other race reports so far with racers using the same protocol  who complained of similar experiences.  I just wonder if we are missing some other electrolyte/mineral that causes this that might also have a function in muscle performance as well.  Wondering if anyone else has any thoughts?

  • First thought is potassium, as there is very little in Perform (190 mg sodium and only 10 mg potassium per 70 cal). By comparison, EFS (from 1st endurance) has 300 mg sodium and 160 mg potassium per 96 calories. FWIW, I alternate bottles of perform/EFS on the bike as EFS has what I think is a good electrolyte "blend" (others besides sodium and potassium), but I get gastric distress later in the day(not during the wko interestingly) if I go ONLY with EFS. My explanation for this is that EFS also has 200% of vit. C per 96 calories and it's just TOOOO much vit. C intake during a long wko. I don't know why they add THAT much vit. C, I wish they wouldn't. When I alternate bottles of perform/EFS, I don't get the "churning" of the gut later in the day.
  • So many companies feel the need to add all those vitamins. It's fine if your drinking one a day, but for IM your talking >10. Someone needs to add appropriate amounts of electrolytes without the extras.
  • Totally agree! Of course if it is potassium, some coconut water or a banana here and there ought to take care of it.
  • The three electrolytes, besides sodium that come to mind are potassium, magnesium and calcium. And it's not a calcium problem.
  • Anybody every address other electrolytes besides sodium with the folks at Core Diet?
