Big Bike Box in minivan?

I have one of those Pro Bike cases that I purchased about a year ago.  It's about 4'x4.5'x1' (roughly) and is rectangular.  I love the way it protects the bike, and I can also stuff it with gear.  So far I have transported it in a Honda Pilot (barely fit) and a Toyota Rav4.  I'm planning to take it down to IMFL in a month, but I'm worried about getting it from the airport to the hotel.  I'm pretty sure it would fit in a full sized SUV, but the rental price on that kind of vehicle is about four times the cost of a sedan.  In short, I'm not going to pay an extra $300 in rental fees just to get my bike from the airport to the hotel.  So, I rented a minivan hoping that it will fit.  Does anyone know whether or not a BIG Pro Bike case will fit in a minivan?  Am I just as well off renting a sedan and tying it on the roof?  I'm a boy scout--if I tie it on the roof, it's not going to fall off, so that doesn't worry me.  Beside, the drive from the Panama City airport is pretty gentle.  Thanks.

  • Why not TriBike transport it and eliminate that issue altogether? Is there a partner shop near you?
Extra rental fees for a bigger car/van/SUV, hassle, airline fees, etc, all in place of $300 round trip for TBT?

There's also the option of FedEx shipping the box (I've used Shipbikes.com) to pay $200 round trip from TX to CA and back.
  • I appreciate the thought and have considered it, but the closest TriBike transport drop is 2.5 hours southeast of me (Fraser, MI). Five hours round trip. It's an ugly, congested drive. Then I have to go and pick the bike up again. The fedex option is a little more attractive, but it has other drawbacks and risks. If I'm going to pack the bike and ship it, might as well take it with me, plus I can pack gear with the bike at no extra cost. Good thoughts and appreciated.
  • Hey Steven-

Have you looked into TriBike Transport's "Pack and Ship" option?

  • How big is this box?? Is this a clamshell case, like the TriCo Ironcase? I've fit my case (Performance Something) into a compact car. Put the rear seats down and slide it into the trunk
