How long until the next IM?

So I finished Tahoe and looking to start another cycle, I don't have any races planned for 2014. I have taken it very easy as I know I must recharge.  I have taken the first week completely off and just going to start the transition now.  That being said, is May a late enough target date to look at another LC race or should I push it back further?  I was pretty durable the last cycle.  Was down 2 days for a very minor cold/illness but they were non key days so I still hit the key workouts.

My main goals of increasing speed in the disciplines would start with the OS and moving from there.  Then I could settle into the meat of the IM training.

I figure I have pretty good base fitness now.  I don't feel crazy fatigued or with any lack of motivation.  I mean, outside of no planned races ahead, I am motivated to get some work in.

Just looking at the collective reasoning from everyone that are those in the know.

  • Steve,

You have all of October yet so recover, transition and then get mentally ready for OS work.  Take an extra week off now if needed, not necessarily because of motivation but to give the body a good rest.  If you start the November OS and go late in 2014 it will be a long season.

If you started the NOS (14 weeks) 1 week transition and then 12 week IM that puts you in the first week of May.  So this is reasonable and a fine course of action.  Now if you want to do some get faster plan or a single sport block to help with a weakness then you need to push back the May date accordingly.

  • Physically, you could start another IM cycle anytime. The bigger questions concern your mental, emotional, and social spaces. Do work, your own athletic goals, and your family/friendships allow you to enter into the single minded intensity and focus needed for good performance in LC triathlon?
  • Thanks for the reply guys. Gordon, I was looking at a mid May date so it looks like it could work out.

Al, I keep it pretty much away from the family. I do have the time to just keep it away from the family. So I think that will be okay.
  • Steve,

I'm glad that you posted this. I signed up for IMCDA this week. A late June cycle seemed good for me. I am doing the Beach 2 Battleship full in three weeks so after that one I'll be ready for a mental break though I am going a bit stir crazy this week. Been traveling for work since the 24th and have only been able to do some swimming. Back to the work hard next week then two weeks easy before the next race.

I'm actually looking forward to starting the Outseason. Short but intense workouts help me with weight loss. I can't seem to drop any pounds during IM training.
