Coming Back?
So I've really taken off racing and Tri's since IMFL last year. I've kept up some fitness by doing group rides and some occasional running. Recently, I signed up for IM Boulder for next year. This will be my 5th year with you guys (I think) and I would kinda like to switch some things up this time around to maybe get stronger. I always have back problems when my run volume gets up there in last 12 weeks so this time around I'm going to be religious over a core program 3 times per week (any suggestions). On top of that I was thinking of doing some lifting while I'm at the gym. I know your thoughts on lifting and such but I just feel like I need more strength. This will be my 4th go at the OS + transition + 12 week build so I thought I would look to maybe change something. What's your thoughts on this?
Also, I've really got into group rides over the last year and have come to really enjoy them. These rides still push me to the breaking point every time. Maybe incorporate some of these into training plans?
You can tell me "Chad, you are an idiot and stick to what you know" and that's what I'll do and no hard feelings. I just kinda feel like I might want to try and find someway to get to that next level, rather it be weights or adding in some group rides as additional rides on top of plan. Just thought I would get your input on this as I just feel like Im kinda staying about the same fitness level and want to take it up a notch.

Chad,
Welcome back! We've likely changed things around quite a bit since you were last year so please fill out the Season Planning Survey under the Training tab and I'll plan your season out for you. That is, you end up doing something different from OS + Transition + IM build.
Core / Strength: I know you're busy with a young kid. I recommend you figure out a routine you do at home vs in a gym. Pushups, pullups (of many different varieties), dips, core stuff, planks, done. All you need is a pull up bar and two chairs. Maybe a pair of dumbells if you want.
Yes to the group cycling, very valuable, especially on the weekends in the OS. Just do as much work at the front as you can stand.
I'll stick to group rides on Thursday and Saturday through the winter, no need to worry about pulling as I'm still spitting blood trying to hang on to the A ride, Love it! Sometimes I'll drop to the B ride in which case I'll spend a lot of time on the front, both result in about the same TSS though.
On a more important note, we are expecting a girl in December. So we will have a 20 month old boy and newborn here pretty soon. Funny how the first time I meet you guys I just proposed to my wife, literately, and soon we'll have 2 little ones. So I might be having to wake up a little sooner to get my workouts in
Hey Chad,
You definitely should not load up the 20wk IM plan. Please take the Season Planning Survey (under the Training tab) and I'll plan it all out for you.
