Peter Wick's Macro thread

I have a dilemma. Last year I raced a duathlon in the 3rd week of October (Walpack Wilderness Challenge, sort of a sprint distance/trail run/road bike thingie). I did quite well, placing 7th overall. This year I know I am much stronger and would like to go back and see what I could do. No guarantees but I could make the overall podium if things go right.

However, I plan on joining the November OS plan. I just did a 70.3 last weekend and broke 5:30 for the first time, a very nice cap on a breakthrough season (Thanks almost entirely to EN). When I joined EN last year I was counseled to take a significant break from hard training before beginning my prep for next season. Of course, I didn't and raced that duathlon on 10/22. I trained very hard for 3 weeks at very high intensity and did that race. Then I had 7 whole days to rest before the NOS.

I suppose I should skip that race but it was very fun. It was also quite dangerous with steep run hills to go up and down in the muck. The bike leg was heaven though. I suppose I could do a relay and take the bike leg to avoid the high risk of injury.

Another thing to consider is that we're finishing up the rebuilding process on our house and are looking to move back in later this month. Should I detrain and work on the house? This would probably keep my marriage intact among other things.

  • Since you are racing IMMT, what about starting the OS in December, but joining the Nov OS group so you have a virtual group to train with. OS workouts always follow the same order---Tues bike/run, Wed run, Thurs bike, Sat. bike/run, Sun run----so you'll be in sync with the group, just doing a different workout. No different than the beginner OS doing a different workout than the advanced OS, both are doing the same discipline.

You could also manage the season by doing the Jan OS so you have 2 months to not race with some down time. That will allow for a 14 week OS, 8 week get faster plan, then you jump into the IM plan for about 14-16 weeks before IMMT.
  • Okay, so I have a dilemma again. My season plan has me jumping out of the JOS at 12 weeks because of a hard race (Am Zof) planned for May 18th. After the 12th week I do the 2 week swim camp and then jump back into training with IM plan for IMMT. My question is about which weeks to cut from the JOS., Do I skip ahead to week 11 and go through to week 14 or do I just keep on the plan and do weeks 9-12? I know the abrupt changes ahead of me in terms of the new styles of workouts post-week 8 will be tough. Just wondering which choice would maximize my remaining OS.

    Thanks

Hey Peter, just follow the plan above, exiting the OS after Wk12 and moving over to Wk2 of the GF plan. The GF plan includes some hard swimming but since AmZof is a duathlon, I'd say that the swimming included in the GF plan would optional for you. Between the 2wk Swim Camp plan and the swimming in the IM plan you'll be fine.
