Someone give me a hug and reassure me I'll be okay

I did IM Canada a few weeks back and I'm doing IMFL in less than 4 weeks.  Work has been crazy lately as I have a criminal trial that starts in a little over a week so I have been very busy (travel, weekends, etc.).  I just haven't been able to do any long bike rides over three hours.  I'm still riding 7-8 hours per week but it's more like an hour here and an hour there plus three hours on the weekend.  Plus I still have a family that I enjoy being around.

Running has been fine.  Swimming has been inconsistent because I normally swim during lunch but I've been working through lunch.

I'm worried about my bike fitness going into IMFL.  I probably shouldn't be so worried since I just did an Ironman six weeks ago plus a few 100-milers prior to that but I do have workout related OCD.

I might be able to get a 100-miler in this weekend and I'll definitely be able to get one in two weeks before the race.

It is what it is and there's not much more I can do.  I'm worrying too much, right?

    Yes.

Rest assured intensity in the context of 6 + hours a week is more important than volume as you roll over in FL. IOW, focus on one FTP workout of one hour each week, plus all the 80% riding you can get in for as long as you can, without getting too fatigued.

Yes Bob. You are worrying way too much. You have the fitness, and you do not need the practice of locking yourself in the aerobars for 5+ hours --- you've got that part down pat.
  • x3.    as Al said.   work the intensity of time your are on the bike.
  • x4 - Just go have fun and thank as many volunteers as possible.

And just to make sure you feel it . . . . here is a group hug for ya.

  • Thanks for the help everyone... except Stark as I can't get that image out of my head.
  • X5 you have the fitness however you are beginning to de-train do as Al suggest you should be ok. The one thing you can do, as you have a few weeks left that may better your position, is watch your diet. Stay lean or drop a few lbs it will help on that long run.

The guy on the right is Al from back in the day.  He has leaned up quite a bit since then.

    Hope all is well.

  • Come here you big lug, my hug is not as gross as John Stark's is. You got this.
  • It's trus; back in the mid 70s I lived in Venice Beach across from the original Gold's Gym. Here's a story I wrote about that ...

  • I prescribe less time on Slowtwitch....

  • @ Al - I worked for the RAND Corporation (while in the Air Force) in Santa Monica for a couple of years from 1988 to 1990. I used to do my easy Friday lunch run down to Venice just to look at the "show". To me, the gym was just a small part of the character of that place. Most of the times I would run down the Palisades and up San Vicente and back. Great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

But I can't call people assholes here.  I need somewhere to spew profanities and call people dumbasses.

  • Another week and all I could muster were five 60 min. rides and one 120 min. ride. Still 7 hours worth of riding but I'd prefer getting in some long work. Oh well. My trial should be over on Thursday so I'll try to get in a four hour ride both Friday and Sunday.
  • HTFU.... (slowtwich required comment) image
  • I wish I had time to HTFU.
  • Did 9.5 hours on the bike the last three days.  I'm cramming for my exam!
