RoadID eCrumbs - A "must have" app for the bike...

I saw a lot of really cool things at Interbike in Vegas, but the one that really blew me away was FREE.

RoadID has put out an iPhone app (Android to come) called eCrumbs that basically tracks you on a ride and sends a link to up to 5 folks via text for them to check in on you. It doesn't noticeably drain your battery (not recording, just posting) and it's very accurate.

You can even set an optional "Stationary Alert" that will notify your "watchers" that you haven't moved in "X" minutes (note - it will warn you first in case you have just taken a really, really long, totally unsanctioned rest stop).

I have used it several times and Maura totally digs it...way better than my random texts of "still safe!" which meant nothing, in retrospect.

I highly recommend you check it out. The full website is here: http://www.roadid.com/ecrumbs

  • New tech?  I am all over it.  Thanks for the reco.

  • I got an email about this from RoadID the other day. I forgot to put the app on my phone though. I'm gonna load it tonight and try it.
  • P, I told Susan about you putting the info about this in the forum. She has liked you since we first met back in '07 but now she loves you. She worries all the time when I ride but now she can worry while knowing where I am!
  • For the Android folks out there, I use an app called Glympse. Very similar functionality. Works great. Free. Gives my wife peace of mind. No brainer!
  • Here's the response Gen got this summer when she asked about an Android app:

    Hello Gen,

We are launching it on the iPhone platform first and if all works out, we will offer it to our Android users - only perfection for them (yes, I'm all for Android). So it is in the pipeline, just a little further away than the iPhone test launch.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

    Be safe out there,

    App for Android

    Dear Gents,

My family and I have been loyal customers for over five years and we LOVE your products and your customer service.  We are very excited about your new app that lets family and friends know if you are out and about or stopped for any length of time.  We were, however, extremely disappointed to discover that it's only available for iPhone users.  Please tell me that you're working on getting it available for Android users like our family and that it will be ready very soon.

Thanks for your continued improvements of such a great product!

    Cheers, Gen Matchette =)

  • I saw this and thought that having a sensor that you could install on your helmet would be a great new device that could like with something like this below.

So tonight I started researching how to make something like this and have it work with a phone App., even as far as thinking about how many g forces it takes to cause a Concussion and possible what the g forces would be from a bicycle crash.

Then I found this,....my dream of an origional idea that was gonna lead to something new...is not gonna happen. I wanted to share on here and thought that the up side of sometihng like this is huge.
Look at the video of how it works.....if it senses what it thinks is a crash, you have so many seconds to disable it on your phone before the alert goes out to your contact people along with your gps location.

I will read up on some of the reviews that I saw online and will report back with what I find.

    Good luck
  • Tried this app out this weekend. really cool, easy setup.

ran for about 1:20, playing Pandora in the background, battery barely took a hit.
  • Awesome...great feedback folks...I will put this to the wiki!
  • Love this app....been using it for several months.  And even more I love that my bride can use it for her runs around the neighborhood - provides a little extra piece of mind.  And when she is out on a long run it gives me a chance to load up our six kiddos in our swagger wagon (go ahead - take a peek at our sweet ride) track her down & surprise her with some hydration.  Great app indeed.
  • Just a quick update on this app. I used it this past weekend on my RR ride and after about 5:45 of riding, it killed my battery completely. Thankfully I caught it before my phone died completely so that my wife didn't think I was dead! No other apps running the entire time but my battery life seems to have suffered since updating to iOS 7.
