Wetsuit in pool?

Hey guys,

I raced in Tahoe two weeks ago and my Xterra wetsuit has finally bitten the dust. I have the beach to battleship full in two and a 1/2 weeks and I am going to make an end of season wetsuit purchase. I found a great deal on a Huub Archimedes 3:5 and like how it fits. I want to test in the water before finalizing the selection. My only real choice is to swim at my pool. Any risk to the suit from swimming in the pool with it as long as I wash it really well afterwards? I don't have any open water chances between now and B2B. Any suggestions on how best to wash chlorine out? Thanks!

"Can I swim in a chlorinated pool with my wetsuit?

Repeated exposure to chlorine will shorten the life of your wetsuit.  A couple of swims in a chlorinated pool to check the fit of the suit won’t do damage as long as you rinse the suit thoroughly with freshwater afterwards.  If you train regularly in a chlorinated pool, you will need to replace your suit more frequently.

Thorough rinsing and washing with a wetsuit specific shampoo with conditioners and chlorine removers can help to extend the life of your suit."

What about using a little bit of UltraSwim shampoo (for removing chlorine from the hiar on our heads) on the gentle cycle of the washing machine? Or, if you are really paranoid, just rinse it in a tepid shower for 5-10 minutes?

  • Al,

Thanks. I didn't even think to google it first, just went straight to da haus. I'm a little obsessive about taking good care of my gear. I'm probably overthinking it. But I normally do. Thanks again!
  • That is an AwESOME suit! I love mine! If it feels like it fits, it probably does. You'll only need a few laps to love swimming in it. Like Al posted, if you rinse it thoroughly in the shower and/or the bathtub, it will be fine. Just don't make a habit of swimming in a pool in it. Be careful, that suit is extremely delicate, so be careful not to nick it with your fingernail.
  • John, you weren't kidding. great suit! I can see why you said it was delicate. Very pliable and soft suit. Looking forward to racing in it in two weeks.
  • I want pics of you in a wet suit in the pool and doing a flip turn.  Please, please, please.

  • John, I am triathlete, not a swimmer, I don't do flip turns.... :-)
