Strength Training for the Bike

Any good resources on Strength training routines for the Bike...either weights or on-bike strength builders?

  • Rich wrote a post in the blog a few years ago about the importance of sport specfic training and the limitations of weight training. I looked for in it the blog but couldn't find it.
Generally I think the gist of it was weights may serve a purpose -- improving specific weakness or imbalances but are not really specific for improving cycling strength. If you want to get strong on the bike, ride the bike. FTP and VO2 intervals. Repeat. The sport specific training will pay more dividends than leg presses or squats.
Have you done a full outseason before? The Outseason and Get Faster plans are plenty tough and will build bike strength.
  • I get the whole outseason...sport specific strength etc....so give me some On the bike work...PreSeason...but weights and weight training do serve a purpose as you noted...addressing specific imbalances such as weak glutes......so as I have the time...ie. Pre Outseason...thats kinda what I'm looking for...
