Questions about Road Map

Hi Coach Rich!

THANK YOU for taking the time to map out my season and guide me in the right direction for my first IMLP! I was so excited to get your email this morning! As I listened to the screencast and looked through the road map a few questions popped up. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

1. When I registered for IMLP, I registered for Syracuse at the same time. So I am committed/ paid for the race.  It is possible to do this race? Would my training change at all? I looked into getting a refund, but it wouldn't be much and I would hate to waste that money. Also, on my roadmap it says REV3 too, does that mean try and do both races? I would like to do the LP camp.

2.  I notice I don't have a HIM plan, but the get faster plan, and then starting IM plan at week 7.  Can you tell me about the get faster plan? or why my plan is laid out like this (no HIIM)?  I'm just curious and I guess I am nervous about the distances so I want to make sure I am ready for that! (which I know EN will make sure I am ready for, but I just want to understand my plan &nbspimage

3.  When I first filled out the training survey, I had just signed up and hadn't searched around.  I thought of a little bit of information that maybe I should have included.  I am working on a PR 5K right now.  I have gone from 32:07 in March to 26:11 in August...my goal is 25:00). The date is Nov. 10 and then I have a 5 M race on Thanksgiving Day.  I read how about swimming is not where I should invest my time, but swimming is something that I enjoy doing/ something I feel comfortable with so I swim 2 x week.  Will I have to stop this?

Sorry for all the questions! I am really just trying to wrap my head around everything AND make sure I am doing everything I should be doing!! Thank you so much for your help!!

No, Syracuse isn't a deal breaker. I suspect that WTC offered the Syr/LP combo...because they are trying to sell Syracuse slots, not because the Syracuse/LP combo makes the best season/race planning sense. IOW, they didn't consult me . An early June HIM would just be a better choice, which is why I put Rev3 on your SP. Pretty sure I did that as I was talking in my screencast, just me taking notes. No, don't do both races, but would be very good if you could go to Patrick's IMLP camp.

(which I know EN will make sure I am ready for, but I just want to understand my plan  . 98% of the time I start people in the IM plan at least 12wks out from their race. Sometimes more but rarely less. Because Syracuse is well within that 12wk window, the IM plan serves as your HIM training plan...if that makes sense. More on the GF plan here: http://members.endurancenation.us/Forums/tabid/57/aft/8506/Default.aspx

It's the members-only solution that we prefer to use the gap between the end of the OS and the start of your "this is the plan you're doing for your A-race" plan. The short answer is that after the OS you are much more fit than the first ~8wk of the IM plan assume you to be, so this GF plan (it's harder) is a better fit for you.

5k and any other running races you want do during the OS are perfectly fine. Swimming 2x/wk is fine. Mon and Fri are best for that in the OS plan. However, we very, very, very often see that people find that the addition/retention of swimming in the OS plan can leave them a bit stretched out. It's a tough, tough training plan so just be smart about it.

Sorry for all the questions! I am really just trying to wrap my head around everything AND make sure I am doing everything I should be doing!! Thank you so much for your help!!

  • Thank you Coach Rich!! I REALLY appreciate you getting right back to me! I already feel better about everything.  I will def look into seeing what I can do about Syracuse, but for now I am going to go forward with it.  THANK YOU for answering all my questions! I'm so excited about EN!

  • Hi Coach!

Quick Update! I am no longer going to do Syracuse...after much thought and starting with the Team I would much rather do Quassy with the Team.  It's local for me and it just makes more sense! Plus as you said, I want to be prepared for my A race.

Just wanted to confirm that nothing would change in my road map, correct?

    Thanks again!!!
