"My name is John . . . and I am addicted to the EN Way"

Ever since joining EN I am no longer willing to simply do a "chat and ride" or "run and chat."  When out on the road I am always looking for the next chance for an ABP section or do an interval.  I have the Beverly Hills Gran Fondo 50 miler next month with my wife and nephew (he will be on a mountain bike).  It will be slow going.  I get bored and antsy if I am at 50% of FT with a friend for more than 15 minutes so I am already noodling where I can get some interval work done along the BHGF course and circle back to them.   I think I may be addicted to EN.

The EN Way is now in my DNA.  And I am sure I am not the only one.  Correct?

  • Hi John! I can show you my 4yr EN coin if you want because I too am addicted...
  • Hi John! Recognizing you have a problem is a big step. We're all here to help you get thru this difficult time.....
  • My Name is Scott "New Yawk" Dinhofer and I am addicted to the EN way!
  • My local tri peeps don't seem to like how hard my effort is frequently. They like the "chat and ride" or "run and chat" sessions, those are for recovery only IMO.
  • Riding slowly causes me deep emotional distress if not outright physical pain. Every year at RAGBRAI when I make an effort to ride with the social group I'm constantly screaming backwards "I'm not even pedaling! How are your legs moving and you are going slower than me coasting??? GAHHHHH"

Think next year I'm going to tow a speaker trailer, pony keg or parachute to help alleviate the stress.
  • In all honesty Stark, I do have advice for you... Leave your bike computer at home. Or at least remove everything but Distance, speed, and cadence. Do NOT consider it a workout. and do NOT look at your power numbers or IF. Just think of it as a fun day out with your wife and nephew, that's it. If you "need" to do something interesting to distract yourself, play "cadence games"... Things like see if you can ride for X minutes at a cadence of 120. Or Climb the next hill in your big chain ring at like 35 or 40 cadence. That will make little challenges for you that won't make it look like you're too "good" to ride with them. And some Gran Fondo's have 2 or 3 "timed" hill climbs. If this one does, then agree with your wife and nephew ahead of time that you will "race" these and then wait for them at the aid station at the top. And have fun!
  • Well, I am past 4 years with EN now. I have fought the assimilation along the way, but the EN Borg has slowly and steadily taken over. Resistance is futile.
  • I am not willing to give up my addiction, the intervention people from LSD approach have tried. They say that they will no longer be apart of my addiction and will not hold the wheel nor keep shoulder to shoulder with me. They keep saying that at some point, I will hit rock bottom with cumulative fatigue, injury or Frielitis. No matter how many PR's I set, they keep telling me the EN way is just short term euphoria.....but I can't help myself....I'm off for FTP and some ABP
