IMFL RR#2 Race Plan

RR1 went fine a couple of weeks ago all things considered. I crashed pretty hard on the bike about 20mi into the ride. Got back up, pulled myself together and kept going. I waited a bit too late in the morning to start and it got REALLY hot in San Antonio. I also did a route that runs by my front door but had 3k of climb. Bike TSS was 294. Ran 6mi off the bike. My goal pace was 10:15 min/mi. I found it very hard to go that slowly so everytime my lap pace dipped below 10min/mi, I walked till it was back at 10:30 pace.

For RR2, I am going to drive out to a flatter course. One we use for a local 25mi TT series. I will just do laps, making the turnaround at 10mi instead of 12.5 so that I ride 20mi laps till I hit 112mi (by cutting the last lap short) or 6 hrs at my target watts (160-165). I will swap out bottles every 2 hrs so there will e a brief stop at 2 and 4 hrs but I wont have to get off the bike.

For nutrition, I will put down 24oz of perform every hr and take a gel every 30 min. I will also carry a couple of power bars and will swap out 1/2 bar for a gel if I get sick of gels. The gels will be in 2 flasks.

I will ride in EN tri top. Gel flasks will fit in pockets. Will ride in arm coolers and aero helmet. My race belt has a pocket on it that can hold powerbars, car key, phone, ID and credit card.

T2 will be bike put bike back in trunk, socks, running shoes, swap out gel flasks as if I was going to run the whole 26.2, grab bannana and pickle juice and go. I will run 1/2mi out and 1/2mi back loops just like last time, walking if I go out too fast.

  • Sounds like a good plan....may steal some of that in the spring. Castroville and back from my house is 51miles exactly. 471 is a great road isn't it? Good luck and try to stay upright...I crashed two weeks before HITS Marble Falls and broke clavicle....a lot of training to not be able to race. Stay safe.
  • Jeff - Ive only ridden the area once. Sounds like you know it better than I do. My only concerns are logistical. Any idea where I should park? And also any idea what traffic is like on a week day?
    thx!
  • Yes, I ride 471 to Castroville and back from Helotes all the time. Traffic is not bad, although I've never ridden there during "rush hours" on a weekday.  The shoulder is wide though, so even if traffic is more than usual, it still feels pretty safe.

Where to park.....couple of options....near where 471 begins off of Culebra, there are a couple of gravel "driveways" just big enough for a car/truck.  I've parked there before when my wife has ridden with me.  Option 2 - There is a convenience store in Castroville, which is my turnaround point to head back - you could park there, but that's a long haul from Fair Oaks.  Another good option is a convenience store on Culebra.  It's just east of 211.  Only downside of this is that you'd have to negotiate the intersection of 471 and Culebra on each loop to get to your car.  But, there is a big gravel parking lot there next to the convenience store and that intersection is not bad.

Let me know if any of that is confusing.

  • I dont mind the drive. I am gonna pack the car up tonight and drive while I drink coffee / wake up anyway. I was originally thinking that I would ask the iron haus fitness club if I could park there or if not park at the convenience store in castroville. I like te idea of parking near a convenience store in case anything goes wrong.
    thx!
  • Iron haus is another option. Didn't think about that.
  • I called ironhaus and they were really cool. Let me park all day and use their bathroom and get water after.
The road was perfect. Did 4x20 and 1x32. 1300ft of climb. Perfect for Florida. Rr went great.
  • Good to hear. Looked like a perfect day. Did your run go ok too? I've never done a full IM RR. Only HIM.... Totally different I suspect.
  • not so different actually. not as intense for sure. The bike drags on. mental ups and downs. The run is the same 6mi or 1 hr. The toughest part of the IM RR run is keeping the pace slow.
Run went fine though. Good luck in Austin. I have done that race the past 2 years. I will miss it. Going back to austin next year for sure.
  • Thanks.  Hoping to at least stay off the ground this time.

  • Jimmy. For swim TT pace plus 10-15 sec. that will help keep heart rate in check. Bike: Know your zone 1/2 heart rates. When you come out of water your heart rate will be elevated. Use the first part of ride to lower that heart rate into proper zones. This will allow you to begin taking in proper nutrition. Once heart rate settles focus on power but still pay attention to heart rate. You may have to make adjustments. Same thing with run. Know paces and heart rate so you can adjust accordingly. Good luck and have a great race.
