Blas Luna Macro Season Discussion

Is it a good idea to get a formal V02 Test for the run and a power test for the bike before I begin every new HIM plan? If so, how many days after a race should I wait to test. The reason I ask is because if I'm repeating the same plan for every HIM with the same targets, then how do I know if I'm improving?

The training plans have testing scheduled into them so that your pace and power zones will change as your fitness increases. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.

  • Rich, I just found out my wife is pregnant! This will be our 3rd child. So I'll have to make some changes to my season plan. My goal was to complete a full ironman in 2015, but now I'm thinking I should do it before the baby is born. I'm pretty nervous about the challenge so what do you think? I completed my first HIM last month and will be doing Longhorn 70.3 this weekend. I'm looking at Ironman Texas in May 2014 since my wife will be about 6 or 7 months by then. I figure after I complete my first Ironman then I'll continue with just unstructured training while I fully focus on the new additon to our family. What are your thoughts?
  • Congrats!

First...I highly recommend you ask your wife if training for and racing an IM is cool with her. This is obviously not your first kid-rodeo but this will be your first time training for an IM. I recommend you clearance from the tower first .

That said, there are no concerns from a training / season planning standpoint. We can sort that out. But I do have concerns about finishing your season with such a late HIM + going kinda straight into training towards your first IM = a VERY early season race while your wife is pregnant. That's going to be a pretty tough mental and lifestyle challenge.

  • I hear you.  I absolutely need to have her on board!  I did talk to her and she's good with it as long as I'm there for her during her pregnancy.  My situation is unique in that I only work a few hours a month (trust fund) so I do all my training during normal work hours. The downside of this though is that I always train alone.  The only day that my family is really affected is Sunday mornings and so far my wife says she really enjoys that alone time with the kids.  I'm going to resubmit my season survey so you can advise.  Thanks for the practical advice and I will be fully committed to the training but always focused on what truly matters.

  • Rich, hold off on changing my season plan.  I know my wife will support me for my goals but she's been there for me all this year so I need to be able to support her during her pregnancy.  The news came as a suprise to me so more than anything I just need time to re-evaluate my goals.  Thanks

Ok, thanks. When you get things settled, just resubmit your Season Planning Survey, under the Training tab above. That will put it into a regular process vs these forum threads that I have to remember to come back to. Thanks!

  • Rich, I just finished my second 70.3 yesterday. I improved by over 30 mins from my first one just last month! I'm most proud of the improvements I'm making on the swim (I've been working w a local pro). It's apparent to me that I need to really work on the run in order to maintain my pace. As I mentioned before, my wife's pregnant so I'm not racing any long Tri's next year. I've decided to go ahead and do a marathon in February to keep me motivated thru the winter. After that I want to use next year to get stronger and faster especially on the run. What is your advice for next year? What plans should I do? I haven't submitted a new season survey because I don't plan on racing other than the marathon. Thanks
  • Blas,

I have a survey here that you submitted on the 23rd. I was about to do that Season Plan for you. So I'm to ignore that?
  • Yes please disregard it. I submitted it before I reconsidered my plans for next year.
  • Ok, my notes:

    • Take a couple weeks mostly off, now, to officially end your season and reset your head. Just informal training.
    • Then do the Run Focused plan, Wks 1-6
    • Then load up the Marathon training plan to end on your scheduled marathon.
    • After your marathon we can have a "what's next" conversation about where to go from there.

    Thanks!
