Food allergy and sports nutrition

Team EN and Coaches......

I have had a severe shellfish allergy for the last 2 years which requires me to carry an epi-pen everywhere I go. While I have gotten used to this after lots of education and many trips to the allergist, I have been doing much homework on sports nutrition and I am having a very tough time finding products that:

-don't have shellfish or
-don't have any ingredients like glucosamine, fish oil, etc.....
-aren't made in a facility that also produces shellfish/ fish products.

I really thought that this would be easy, but I really am striking out with lots of products. While I have done the research online, I always email or call the company to double check.

Any ideas out there? Anyone know any "allergen free/organic" sports nutrition? I am looking for all aspects of sports nutrition; recovery, electrolyte replacement, etc.......

Thanks and any information/ suggestions would be helpful.

-Pete

  • Have you looked into any of the make your own sorts? I know for recovery a lot of people use chocolate milk, and I've made my own lara bars for during long rides with dates and nuts in a food processor (if you can tolerate fat/fiber during workouts). I have a friend that uses honey with some salt added during runs. Allergies are scary stuff!
  • Peter, for make your own, I can recommend the lemon gel and the recovery drink in a book called Thrive, by Brendan Brazier. There are other sports recipes in it, too, those are the ones I've tried and i really like them. I have intolerances, not allergies, but still like the thought of knowing exactly what's in what I am using.
  • Rachel and Kylie,

Thank you both for the suggestions....."making my own" was in the back of my mind and now I think I will put more thought and effort behind this.

Thanks again and good luck with your 2014 seasons!

  • Runners World has a video on making your own. I used it and its pretty good.
  • Thanks for the info Brenda..... I'm trying a few homemade "drinks" during today's run.
  • www.foodbabe.com has a homemade electrolyte drink.

1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda, juice of one lemon,1 tsp maple syrup ( would omit this if you use orange juice instead)
She does not mention how much water.
