  • As my daughters (yes two) will be going to undergard and grad school in Australia (RMIT) starting in 2014, I am looking into races in Australia to hook on to a visit. I hope to do either the IM or HIM at Cairns in June. I know that Cairns is on the opposite end of the country from Melbourne but we wanted to visit both. Haven't made my final decision yet. Eager to get advice on the race course and the venue as a whole. Thanks in advance.
  • I have signed up for the 70.3 Cairns on 6-8-2014. Any advice on the course or the area would be helpful. Got a place to stay but resaurant or activity recommendations would be appreciated.
  • Can't be any help on Cairns but I did want to say that your daughters will probably have a great time in Melbourne. My wife and I visited my sister in Melbourne a few years ago and it was a fantastic city. I'm hoping to return for another visit in the next couple of years. If I make it through my first IM July maybe try my hand at the Asia-Pacific IM, or Geelong 70.3.

Best of luck at the Cairns 70.3!
  • @ Christopher They may be adding a 70.3 in Victoria/Melbourne.
  • Anyone signed up for 70.3 Taiwan?
  • Would love to hear from anyone racing Ironman New Zealand in 2015!

Or even if you've been before - how was it!?image
  • Hello everyone. Although my profile says Louisville, I'm actually living in Okinawa, Japan. Nice to see some other folks in this region of the world.
  • Roy - what are your races this year? I am in the middle east and will either race in South Africa or Australia in March 2016. I have a half later this year in Dubai.
  • Hi David. I'm in for a half in South Korea and a full back in the states this year. Unfortunately, my work schedule coveres up IM Japan which is the one I really wanted to do while I'm here. The other kicker is that it is actually cheaper by a factor of 2-3 for me to fly home to the states and race than it is to hit most races here. I'm going to try to do IM Taiwan next year, but will have to see how my schedule plays out. IM Cairnes would work well from a schedule perspective, but it is literally cheaper for me to fly wife + 2 kids there from the states than to fly me there. I'm all about paying for memorable experiences, but it has to be within reason. image

I've got a friend stationed near you. He got crushed by the water at Challenge Dubai last month.
  • I just moved out here last year. I' spent 2014 doing fun things with my fitness as I adjust to the new seasonal schedule here. (Sept - March in ME vs. April - Sept in USA). IMSA/IMAU works for me because March Nov - March is perfect training weather.

Is the family still back stateside? My family is relocating here this August. I am right with you on costs of transportation to these races. The price tag to transport myself, a bike, my beautiful bride, and three children under 7 years old is a small fortune. I am incredibly lucky that I fund a large portion of my travel for these events (within reason) via my company.

Ever give any though to IM Malaysia? Might be my next IM race after IM South Africa. Would probably not do both IM SA and IMM in the same year though.

Just nice to have someone else looking at these races.

    Cheers.

  • Hey Guys I'm just starting to think about my next IM too. Could be New Zealand again in 2016 but the other two I'm considering are Cairns and Melbourne. Decisions!
  • David - unfortunately, the family (wife + 3 kids) are state side. The timing for this assignment was horrible (wife is in her last year of a doctorate program). Malaysia doesn't work from a scheduling perspective. I'm in for Louisville this year and I'll be gone by that time next year.

Chris- I'm trying the not so subtle hard sell on Cairnes to the wife for 2016 (family vaca, diving for the wife which she loves, once in a life time type thing). She's lukewarm right now (and since she is a total tri-supporter, I don't want to push too hard). Of course, if there was a big group... who knows.
  • Chris - how is the bike course of Melbourne? Is it a course which allows us to leverage EN execution to gain an advantage?

Personally, I'm leaning towards IM South Africa because they changed it to a difficult/challenging course with lots of opportunities to make the right EN decision. I understand you are local Kiwi and that effects your destination. Tons of great races near you.
  • Haven't done IM Melbourne but seen on tv and driven on the HWY. two x outback on the HWY which is mildly rolling. not very technical. The Melbourne run is point to point. Cairns is rolling with small short climbs with beautiful views. The run at cairns is three loops and more spectator/family friendly. Melbourne has tons to do with the family. Cairns is obviously smaller but has the divng, snorkling, etc.
